We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Siri Lambu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Siri below.
Siri, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents (who are both creatives but worked in the IT industry) put me in as many extra-curricular classes as possible as a kid and let me drop the ones I didn’t like. This is how I narrowed myself down to someone that is passionate about creativity. I realised I was best at the drawing class I attended when I got home and my book fell open in the living room. My mom was astonished at my drawing of a duck with her ducklings. This unexpected validation encouraged me to continue exploring art and design fields.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always found comfort in discomfort. Captivated by the dark underbelly of traditional beauty, I draw inspiration from horror cinema, crime stories, and the legacies of strong women in history. This unusual perspective drives me to challenge convention and invite the unexpected in my work, with which I often like to provoke thought.
A designer from the city of Bangalore (Bengaluru), I am currently in my sixth year of fashion studies with two years of professional experience. I graduated from India’s reputed National Institute of Fashion Technology in 2021 with a Bachelor of Design in Fashion Design.
I enjoy experimental pattern making, hand sewing, illustration, and have a particular penchant for the journey of research and development. Living in Atlanta, I am now pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Fashion at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Right now, I’m in the process of unlearning the use of constant control. From events in my life that have added portions of anxiety to my mental health, I convinced myself that having complete control over everything is a way to keep my mind at peace. After many overwhelming years of practicing this, I have recently begun to loosen my grip and experiment with involvement. It turns out that letting things come to me is an equally satisfying process and better for my sanity. As long as you take responsibility and do the right things, the rest of the world will steer you where you want to be.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As mentioned before, both my parents are creative. In their time, working in IT was the right thing to do in order to bring financial stability to our family. They focused on allowing my brother and me to discover our own passions and insisted that we give it a hundred percent. My brother is now in film school and owns a creative agency, while I’m finishing up my Masters in fashion. I was taught to sew by my mom and her mother, and my dad introduced me to fine arts. Thanks to their efforts, I can now make it my goal to make creativity my family’s profession. I want our family name (Lambu) to be synonymous with the arts.
