We recently connected with Sir Thomas and have shared our conversation below.
Sir , appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned the basic fundamentals of poetry in English class when I was in school. Part of the curriculum consisted of reading classical poetry. Also, a requirement was to identify and explain the different literary devices used to comprise these poems. My first attempt at writing poetry consisted of this classical form of poetry. Once I started performing my poems, I was introduced to the spoken word form of poetry. Spoken word consists of the same literary devices as classical poetry with an emphasis on the expression of the poem. Essentially you take the poem from the page and become the poem. I don’t think there is anything I could have done to speed up the learning process. I feel like I am still learning as I create. I would say a healthy discipline for any art form is to continue learning. The only obstacle that could ever stand in my way is myself. If I don’t push myself to be better, create consistently, and I learn more then It won’t happen.

Sir , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started out performing at open mic events in the Houston area. I would attend between two or three per weekend. I started getting invites to different events after many of those performances. From there, I received many booking requests via word of mouth. After I started gaining more traction, I developed an online presence as well. Those are some of the steps I took but I have to give credit to GOD for allowing it all to come together so well.
My service is Spoken Word. I provide a thought provoking, comedic relief, and faith filled display of thoughts that speak to every aspect of life.
I am proud of myself for stepping into an arena that was once foreign and it becoming familiar. It has taught me a real meaning of success. Success to me is mastering something and continuing to add to the masterpiece.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
There are 2 things which are character and consistency. Character will take you further than your talent in any space. Consistency shows that you are diligent and believe in yourself and your craft.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is hearing about how my poems have impacted someone. My goal is to leave a lasting impression on the listener. I want to be a voice for those who feel that their voice doesn’t matter. I want those people to feel heard. I want them to feel seen. I want to speak hope into their situations. Everyone is going through something. I want to point people to Christ as well. It is rewarding anytime someone shares that my poems have had those type of effects in their life.
