We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sio Jaya a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Sio thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Yes
I obtained it through a fairly long creative process and did not get the results immediately, of course through the stages that most artists usually go through.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an artist who has worked and also exhibited in several places and countries such as Spain, Italy, England, Portugal, India and others, before entering into a more professional world, of course I went through a learning process, namely through the academic world from there I learned many things related to fine arts, especially painting, my works tend to be in two dimensions such as paintings, My works tend to be in two dimensions such as paintings, murals, drawings and there are also 3D works, while my works tend to discuss small things that do occur in the environment around me, be it social or human behavior, so that the works I create are not fixated on mainstream media media that can be anything and I tend to use waste waste in the environment around me to be able to make a work.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I started my profession through the world of education, namely through a study room that specifically studies fine arts, in the middle of the road I have started trying to introduce my work through exhibitions, which initially only around the campus and between campuses, then I tried to submit exhibitions outside the campus including abroad in several countries through internet networks, which at that time were still limited and not as easy as they are now.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
It’s very simple actually, especially in today’s digital era, what is only needed is appreciation, it can be in any form without having to be limited.
