We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sinyu Deng a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, SinYu thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
I started my photography journey as a hobby. Over time, through constant practice and taking on various projects, I developed a deeper passion for it and realized that it could evolve into a business. Initially, I was someone who wanted everything to be perfectly prepared before launching, but I quickly learned that you don’t really know what works until you actually dive in and start doing it. It’s easy to have big dreams but feel stuck on the first step. While having professional cameras, lenses, and lighting equipment is important, I also learned that creativity and resourcefulness go a long way.
I didn’t begin with top-tier equipment; I used the camera I had and, when I needed lighting, I would improvise with flashlights or borrow equipment from friends. For backgrounds, I repurposed household items like bedsheets. Slowly, I built up my experience and gathered the necessary props and equipment, which eventually led to me owning my own photography studio.
Becoming a fashion photographer isn’t easy, especially because it requires a strong network. I started reaching out to potential collaborators on Instagram and knocking on the doors of local stores to see if they needed product photography. I also expanded my scope from fashion to include weddings, couple shoots, portraits, videos, and other media, which helped me grow into a more versatile media production team.
It was only after actually executing my plans that I truly understood what I lacked and what I still needed to learn. This process allowed me to improve continuously and refine my craft as I moved forward.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Sin-Yu Deng, a photographer and new media artist with a deep passion for exploring the intersection of technology and art. My journey into this industry has been a dynamic and evolving process, rooted in collaboration and continuous networking. I’ve had the privilege of working with a diverse range of creative individuals and teams, and every collaboration has expanded my skill set, allowing me to bring new ideas and solutions to my work. It’s been a cycle of growth—constantly learning from others while also refining my own approach.
In terms of what I offer, I specialize in portrait and fashion photography, but my services extend to various forms of photography, including product photography, wedding photography, family portraits, and event photography. As a new media artist, I also delve into video production, visual design for performances, and sound design. My experience in new media allows me to integrate innovative techniques and concepts into my work, creating immersive experiences for my clients and audiences.
What sets me apart is the interdisciplinary nature of my work. I don’t limit myself to one form of creative expression. Whether it’s photography, video design, or sound creation, I always aim to blend technology with traditional art forms in a way that feels fresh and engaging. This versatility allows me to approach projects from unique perspectives and provide solutions that are both creative and technically sound.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that my work is driven by a genuine love for creativity and collaboration. I’m always open to new ideas and challenges, and I’m dedicated to delivering work that not only meets but exceeds expectations. Whether you’re looking for visually compelling photography or innovative media solutions, my goal is to bring your vision to life in ways that are both memorable and impactful.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been building strong relationships with my existing clients and treating every project, no matter the size, with the utmost care and attention to detail. I believe that satisfied clients are your best marketing tool and portfolio. By consistently delivering high-quality work and creating a positive experience, clients are more likely to refer me to others and return for future projects. Word-of-mouth and referrals have been incredibly powerful in expanding my network.
This approach also means I never take any project for granted. Every collaboration, no matter how big or small, is an opportunity to showcase my skills, creativity, and professionalism. Maintaining this level of dedication has been key to establishing trust and long-term connections in the industry.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely, the core driving force behind my creative journey is the personal satisfaction and sense of fulfillment I get from my work. It’s important to love what you create. When I look at my own work and feel proud, knowing that it carries meaning and reflects my artistic vision, it gives me a deep sense of achievement. This feeling of creating something that resonates with me is what fuels my passion and pushes me to keep evolving as an artist.
Ultimately, the goal is to produce work that not only speaks to me but also connects with others on an emotional or intellectual level. It’s that intersection of personal satisfaction and meaningful impact that keeps me motivated to continue creating.
