We recently connected with Sintia Rodriguez and have shared our conversation below.
Sintia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
Family business is a big thing to me. I come from a family of Mexican Immigrants our family has done many things to survive. Worked many jobs especially some you don’t really enjoy doing. My parents have done many jobs from cleaning house, to working at a dry cleaners, to building homes. My parents are very resourceful people they know how to do many things and as a young child they thought me to not be afraid to do or learn new things and to be open minded. My parents now have a successful Decorating and rental company for events that they have poured there hard work and time to. They though me to work hard for what I want in life and to fight for what I want. Thanks to them I have all the love and support to start my own business and my own journey.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Sintia Rodriguez. I am a 24 year old and I am the owner of Sintia Artesanias Boutique. I got started with my business last May. I had started my business at first as a little help for my self. I was working a part time job at a chiropractic clinic and wasn’t making much money and needed another source of income to help my self. I’ve always wanted to be my own boss and I’ve always be interested in my culture. I found a passion for Mexican artisans, I became a fan of the art and culture I realized we don’t have many things like those here where I live. I saw many beautiful things that I would love to bring to my community and have people explore and learn about it. That’s when I had the idea of opening a small business. My boutique brings many opportunities for the indigenous people that I buy the from, everything in my shop come from Mexico, and from many different parts as well. I give these people an opportunity to keep there business open and I’m able to help spread there beautiful work. I’d rather support these hard working Immigrants then any luxury brand. So I did just that I saved up some extra money and started to plan my business. I started to look for artisan and made good friends with some of them even.I started to sell my things at markets, popup events, and festivals and even online .Now I have a good verity and an hoping to expand my business into an actual Store some day.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for me has been being able to meet new people at the market and pop up events that I have had. Meet new people is one of the best keys to keep your business growing especially when you run into them and remember them.
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
I had just started my business last May and decided to do an event for a community Latin festival in October . I signed up for the event and with very little experience on how to be in charge of a business or how to promote it. I had gotten a call a week before the event saying that the local news wanted me to be a guest speaker to promote the festival and to talk about my business. I was very nervous but very excited as well. Nothing like that has ever happened to me I was in shock. I a very shy person but when I want something and put my heart to it I am unstoppable. I decided to do the interview. I went in at 5:00 am to do my 8 minutes interview on live local television. I was very nervous but I did my best. A couple days later after the interview I got many calls from people asking about my business and wanting to order from my business it was overwhelming. When I came to the day of the event a lot of people recognize me from tv. Doing that interview was one of the best things that has helped my business a lot. After that I had alot of confidence in my business yes sometime things will be though and slow but just work hard and keep your head held high and everything is possible.
