We were lucky to catch up with Sinna-G recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sinna-G, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Gratefully, I have been able to earn a full-time living from being a DJ since 1999!…I got my start as a light-tech in a club for a DJ by the name of George Rodriguez, and was so intrigued by what he was doing, that I started bombarding him with questions and the rest is history as they say!
Just being a Female in a Male dominant profession, proves to be difficult sometimes! It’s never come easy, I’ve just had to put in extra work or knock on more doors to acquire gigs throughout the years.
So that’s my advice to anyone going after what they’re passionate about….Stay focused….Stay diligent….Don’t be afraid of work!…Put yourself out there!
Most importantly, just pay attention to the signs…..If things are falling into place, then you’re on the path you’re meant to be on! If it’s a constant struggle, then maybe make some adjustments somehow, which could include reevaluation of what it is that you’re doing!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Way back in 1999, I was an Assistant Manager at a store that sold CDs (GASP! – yes, people actually went to the store to buy music to listen to pre-modern technology!!!) A gentleman came in right when we were about to close and asked if we had a CD Single of a hot, new song. Unfortunately, we were sold out! But I happen to have a copy in my car and I mentioned that to him. He immediately started begging to borrow it and reached into his wallet and grabbed his business card. He wrote on the back, “Free entry” and his initials. He said that if he could borrow it, I could come to the club he was playing at that night and hang out with him in the DJ booth. So that’s what I did! Walked out to my car, let him borrow it, went home, showered, changed, and went out to the club that night to hang with my new friend to watch him DJ!
We hit it off! As I was standing in the booth with him watching him multitask and run the music as well as the lights, he asked me to hit a few buttons on the light board for him while he was busy. The next thing you know, he asked me if I would like to be his “light tech” every weekend! I remember that my pay was $75 for the night + a 6-pack of beer! HAHA! I thought to myself, “Why not?”
So, I started my new part-time, weekly gig of being this DJ’s “light tech.” Every time I was in the booth with him, I was so intrigued with what he was doing, that I would watch him, and constantly ask questions. After a few months, I thought that I could try my hand at actually DJ’ing myself. I totally lied my way into my first gig! I didn’t even know how to turn the equipment on for crying out loud! LOL! Fast forward 23 years, here I am as a Full-Time DJ and on-air personality on MIX 100 (100.3FM) here in Denver!
Along the way, I have played everything from weddings to corporate events. From wine bars and lounges to festivals and nightclubs, even Denver International Airport! From in-store events at Wal-Mart, Neiman Marcus & Ulta, and gigs from coast to coast in the US, to gigs in Canada & the Philippines! And I have done this all on my own without representation from a booking agency or management.
I say “on my own” but I truly owe almost all of my success to people along the way that believed in me. The nature of this business is such a “who you know” industry! I am beyond grateful to all of the people that saw something in me, and saw something bigger for me than I even could see myself!
Music is my life! It’s my passion! It’s what drives me! And I am blessed to be able to do this for a living and do not take one second of it for granted!!!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, it’s simply being able to get paid and earn a living doing something that I’m so passionate about. Music is truly the core of who I am! There is not a day that goes by that I don’t listen to music in some capacity. And I don’t take it for granted! I’m so grateful to be able to do this year after year!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My current goal for 2023, is to really dive into producing music more. This will not only include various House Music tracks and/or remixes, but getting into producing mediation type music. A more chilled-out vibe!
I would also love to finally, after 24 years, find a booking agent or management company to represent me. I’ve gotten so far doing it on my own, and I know there are so many other opportunities out there, that I might not be able to access going at it alone!
