Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Simple Existence. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Simple, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
For us, our most meaningful project is the band itself. We met as young musicians in high school and played all around Arizona but when graduation came we had to go our separate ways. Mylan lived in Flagstaff, worked as a cook and eventually returned to Tucson to pursue another career in the trades. Rick got a biology degree at the University of Arizona and worked at a hospital, as an engineer, and is now a high school teacher. Koda studied classical guitar at NAU, moved to Virginia and worked in a taqueria and in french fine dining. On the dance floor of Mylan’s wedding the three of us decided that there was one thing missing – Simple Existence. We once again took over Koda’s parents garage and wrote a bunch of new music that we feel is better than anything we’ve done before. Hard Headed Woman, our first original single, was written during the first rehearsals we had after getting back together. It was recorded in Tucson at Cima Music Studio with Ricky Wascher and is the perfect representation of who we are. Now we are lucky enough to play at some of the venues we grew up going to, and have our music be a part of the scene that has given us so much.
Simple, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Simple Existence is a three-piece rock band from Tucson, Arizona. All three members were dedicated musicians before being introduced to each other by a high school friend. After several years apart we have banded back together to make the kind of music we want to hear. We play and love Rock music but all bring a variety of musical influences to craft a unique sound that only could’ve been made by the three of us in Tucson. Our sound is dynamic, soulful, and vintage but sits firmly in the modern musical landscape. We are proud of the work we’ve put in to create a signature sound and even more proud of the happiness it brings our listeners.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
We love the fact that we can make something out of nothing. It makes us so proud to have our ideas (musical or otherwise) effectively expressed in something we create. In our songs we tell stories that reflect the lives and experiences of people like us. When people hear our music they can relate to it because there’s a universality in the specific situations we write about. Whether its a song about lost love, like in “Dancing in my Room”, or a song that insists there are better things on the horizon, like “The Best is Yet to Come”, it’s most rewarding when we can share a part of ourselves that others can take something from . Being as homegrown as we are the relationship between our art and our listeners has always been a special part of what we do.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
There are so many different ways that this world could be changed that would make the lives of creatives better, but the most immediate thing everyone can do is to support local live music. Going out to see the people in your town do what they love and share their art can be one of the most rewarding parts of being a member of a community. Even if you’ve never heard of them, seeing people go see a local band at a locally owned venue can revitalize that artists creative energy and provide support for the establishments where this art is showcased.
