We were lucky to catch up with Simone Myrie Dawson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Simone thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.

My journey with beauty started when I got my first job in the medical field in NYC. At the same time, I realized that I had super-sensitive skin — after 12 hrs shift I would go home with lots of redness and irritation on my face. That was really challenging for me. One day I got the idea to start my own skin-care brand. It was in March 2009. I always knew I wanted to create something, but I wasn’t really sure how until My daughter Drupassion Winterjoy had terrible eczema.

What really drew me was the idea of making a social impact. It was important to me that I wasn’t just creating another skin-care company just for the sake of creating one because the market is already so saturated —
I wanted to create a skin-care brand for Simmie by Simmie I wanted to include my personal experiences and my passions in the products and the company, and I knew serving people with sensitive skin was going to be a core part of that living in New York City which is a huge city with so much pollution, and I realized while I was doing researches into skin care that air pollution and micro dust was probably the main cause of my own skin concerns.That made me want to create products for other people living in cities,

After doing more research I immediately became infatuated with the many natural options to achieve beautiful, healthy skin. I was also repulsed at all the toxic, synthetic ingredients that the majority of large personal care companies use.
The unnecessary chemicals they use have over time been linked to infertility, cancer, atopic dermatitis and a host of other illnesses!

I decided that I would only make my products with natural ingredients like herbs, organic fruits, essential oils, superfoods and organically derived ingredients to help alleviate the dependency on chemical-filled products that our communities are exposed to. The use of my natural skincare products has definitely given me a whole new respect for nature.

And because I care a lot about social impact. I believe it’s important for people to have access to high-quality ingredients, especially because our skin is still developing and changing a lot over the years, but I found that a lot of products are just way too expensive.They’re not accessible to me and my friends. That’s why affordability was so important to me when creating Simmie Brand , but at the same time, I didn’t want to sacrifice the quality of the ingredients. It was a balancing act…
I created one product inspired by My Daughter Simmie Organic Oatmeal Face & Body Soap for her Eczema, another product Simmie Tangerine Combo Inspired New York City because it’s just one of my favorite place, and then products Simmie Hemp Soap, Simmie Mango Face and Body Butter ,Simmie Brown Sugar and Coconut Body Scrub & Simmie Papaya Skin Cream inspired my country of Birth Jamaica

My Mission is to improve quality of life and increase self-confidence throughout beauty products. I decided on the name Simmie Skincare because once I began making and using my own products, my skin became so radiant that it literally glowed and made me feel good and glowing . My skin has never looked better and I hope that Simmie Skin Care can help you too .I believe that beautiful, healthy skin will make ANY woman feel like the true beauty she is!

One of the most challenging parts of launching Simmie Skin Care was finding a manufacturer so I started making Simmie Skin Care Products out of my kitchen I’ve run into a lot of challenges — a lot of older people doubted me in the beginning — but the fact that I pushed through to the end and actually launched the company was a big moment for me. Knowing that I’m helping other women.
My advice to all Entrepreneurs: find confidence and know that you too can start a company and that is the most rewarding part. You can’t be afraid to be as vulnerable and really bring yourself to the endeavor.
Because I think bringing that authenticity to your company is what gives it the most value.
