We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Simone Hunt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Simone , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I have opened two businesses in the past two years. The first business was my Style Coaching business The Style Wellness Group, LLC in which I help millennial women entrepreneurs gain style clarity. I recently opened up a Private Practice for Psychotherapy The H.U.N.T ( Hope, Unity, Nurture, and Transformation) Counseling and Consulting Services, LLC in which I assist young adults with managing depression, anxiety, self-esteem and life transitions. The steps I took was completing research on the business such as systems, creating a business plan, consulting with colleagues, learning my target audience and budgeting for start up cost. The challenges that I faced in the beginning learning how to market by business and being a one women show. Any advice I would give to young professional who might be considering starting their own business, is to do your research and start. It will not perfect in the beginning, but you will learn and perfect your business as you grow.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My Name is Simone Hunt, I was born and raised Jamaica, Queens, NY. I spend my time between Atlanta, GA and Richmond, VA. I went to school to obtain both my bachelors and master’s degree in social work. Once I graduated from master’s program, I feel that I needed to fill a void in my life, I have always loved fashion and wanted to be a stylist. I began my professional career as a stylist in which I worked with different magazines to create editorial looks and worked with women to improve their image. In 2021, I wanted to take my Styling business to next level, so I made a plan and hired a business coach in 2022. In my Styling Business, I assist millennial women entrepreneurs in finding clarity in their style by utilizing my proven Style Cognitive Method. In my framework, we focus on self-esteem, self-doubt, and focus on the client’s relationship with their body. In my Private Practice, I assist young adults with managing anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and life transitions. I am proud that I was able to open and run two successful businesses.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
The Books that assisted me on my entrepreneurial journey was Clever girl Finance, We Should All be Millionaires: A women’s guide to earning more, building wealth and gaining economic power, The Strong Black Women, and The Four agreements.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
This might be cliché but networking, when I decided to become a Stylist. I went to a networking event and met one of the fellow stylists in the area. She introduced me to her friend who was having an upcoming event and I was able to participate to show that I can style models. From there, I met many photographers and models. One of the photographers I met introduced me to a magazine editor in which I began styling the covers. I maintained the relationship with the Magazine editor/creative director. Fast Forward the Magazine’s creative director started her own magazine, and I was able to style my first two celebrity clients. I use the same principles in mental health. I haven’t had a formal job interview in 6 years because of the connections I created in the field. The last two jobs I held, I didn’t apply for, I was offered a position based on who I knew in the field.
