We were lucky to catch up with Simone Grooms recently and have shared our conversation below.
Simone, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
In the past year I’ve found myself diving again into a set of more meaningful projects for my production company. My main objective for my recent project was to finish the promotional scene from my upcoming movie “Serenity”. I wrote Serenity about five years ago. when I was a sophomore in college attending the University of North Carolina School of the arts. My team’s main focus was to shoot the scene (streetlight) and we did so. After revising the script with my Executive producer and writer partner It was very interesting because it took about another six months to get the final production team together. My idea was to create more ART and not to just follow the basic Algorithm we see on our social media platforms. As it’s been only a year and half for me in Los Angeles it was definitely a challenge.
Simone, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been working in the industry since I was 9 years old. My mom put me in a movie. As someone who took that experience, I’ve created a life for myself to work in any major city in the world, which I’m very proud of because I’m still very young and to reach success very early is super exciting. I just started my production company, and before I just wanted to continue to create meaningful projects. I think it’s very important to learn all about the industry and just those that have come before me, and those who are currently working in it now as someone who is only 24 years old I think it’s very important for me to continue to learn about the world around me because life imitates art, and I think the only way to create more projects is by living my life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist / creative is that I have met amazing people that have helped me with my journey and creative process. The community that comes with being an artist is definitely something that I never take for granted and I’m very lucky to have made art with amazing people in the world and all those things make it difficult I think at the end of the day the art is what surpasses any difficulties, which is why are to me it’s very powerful.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I love this question. The lesson that I had to unlearn was that doing things by myself was going to give me the best result. Meaning working with myself only is how I get my vision across and voice. Getting your voice heard is important but I found out was the best art / work that I’ve created is when I’ve had a team of people around me, and a group of artists and creatives, creating one project together, and with my last scene excerpt from my movie serenity, you really see it the vision of us all. We had an amazing Director team. We had a great production team and for it to be a very small budget film I think we did a very good job executing real Cinema and a short amount of time which I think it’s very important as an upcoming filmmaker. When you’re trying to reach a big audience, working alone isn’t always the most effective. If you are trying to reach a big audience, get a bigger team. I had to learn that and that’s my backstory.
