We were lucky to catch up with Simon Shi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Simon thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I want to inspire others to pursue their passions. I promote a healthy and active lifestyle. I create videos to have a positive impact on people’s lives. I want to be known for that professional triathlete that has a huge Rubik’s cube collection and does crazy solves with those puzzles.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Simon Shi. I am a professional athlete and a content creator. I started making YouTube videos back in 2009 for fun when I was a kid. Since then, I watched the YouTube industry grow and people started making a living from YouTube. I am also a professional triathlete (swim, bike, and run). I have been swimming most of my life.
I want to inspire others to pursue their passions. I promote a healthy and active lifestyle.
My biggest accomplishment is turning professional in triathlon and making YouTube my full-time job.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I started making YouTube videos very early back in 2009. I enjoyed making videos and wanted to put out content for the world to see.
I started seriously posting videos in 2019. Since then, I graduated college and got a job as a software engineer. I still kept my day-job and still posted YouTube videos to save money. I was also in the process of trying to become a professional athlete in triathlon.
Once I turned pro in triathlon, I also saved up some money from my YouTube hustle and decided to go all-in my triathlon and YouTube career.
I also hit 100,000 subscribers on 1 of my channels and was starting to make passive income.
Now, I have 2 editors that edit my videos and a videographer sometimes I hire for more complicated videos.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to be able to inspire people to have an active lifestyle on my triathlon YouTube channel. For my Rubik’s cube YouTube channel, I want to entertain people with Rubik’s cube challenges I do.
