We were lucky to catch up with Sikram Lamaj recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sikram, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I couldn’t have asked for a better upbringing…ESPECIALLY as it pertains to my career choice. I was a military brat, so I moved every 2 years for my entire childhood basically. Because of this, I was able to experience and participate in many different cultures while taking in the music scenes that accompanied. My parents also had a wide range of music that they listened to and I soaked it all in. My father is big on 80s music and all the different styles of Christian music, while my mother was huge on everything else!
Sikram, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a songwriter, music producer, audio engineer, recording artist, teacher, and music critic from Clarksville, TN.
From writing profound lyrics to creating intricate and alluring instrumentals, I love to present uniqueness and variety while fulfilling the needs of the client. I have studied classical composers, opera, and choral music, but I also embrace many other genres and cultures from all over the world. My arrangements and compositions have left their mark in Gospel, Hip-Hop, R&B, and a Capella just to name a few…and I will continue to stretch the limits of my craft.
I graduated from Murray State University with a music degree, and I currently resides in McDonough, GA. where I also offer keyboard and production training. I also founded an artist development page on Instagram called “DopeOrNopeShow”, where we rate songs and offer constructive criticism for no charge!
This is why I also go by the name:
“The Everything Producer”
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
As much as record labels hate to hear it, the reality is that we are in an age where the independent artist is getting ready to take the baton. The silent majority in the music business is about to take center stage. What can society do best to support us? I believe a great start is to create and share social media posts utilizing our creative works. Social media algorithms are so strong these days that you don’t even have to share my song. You can simply make a reel or a story using a 15 second clip of my work, and it will reach thousands by the end of that same day. It is a simple concept, but it is something that anyone with Facebook, IG, or (especially) TikTok can do.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I used to believe that I had to pop while I’m young or else my career in music would not be successful. A lot of the hottest artists we see today are either in the 21-34 year old age bracket, or they at least act that way to appear hip to society. For a while I felt like I had to do the same..but that was before I really paid close attention to the truth about record producers and audio engineers. We could be in our 50s and still come out very successful because “THE IT SOUND” does not discriminate. If you have it and know how to make it, you will always have work. You will always maintain relevance somewhere. The people we see on TV have a bunch of nerdy guys like me in their group to achieve the sound they want. We may not be seen all the time, but I’m cool with that because that means I can enjoy my bag in peace.
