We recently connected with Sijunbo Liu and have shared our conversation below.
Sijunbo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I am making a project exploring the significance of gasoline stations throughout American industrialized history, as well as their role being excellent artistic subjects for photography. The project is initiated based on my personal experience of constantly fueling my vehicle during my travels, since I believe travels across the United States were the best way to familiarize this country as a foreigner. Coincidentally, I got to study a well-known photographic art style called New Topography with an emphasis on industrial architectures to present human interference in the environment in an objective tone. This art style luckily corresponds to my theme of gasoline stations, the symbol of human industrialization. Besides, I feel excited to acquire deeper knowledge of these common service facilities to get to know the thoughtfulness of the ordinariness in our daily lives.
Sijunbo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a photography major, I specialize in portrait, landscape, event, and commercial photography, aiming to capture moments that evoke emotion and leave lasting impressions. I offer tailored solutions to clients, addressing their unique needs with creativity, attention to detail, and dedication to excellence. What sets me apart is my commitment to continuous learning and innovation, ensuring that I deliver high-quality, professional results. I take pride in the relationships I build with clients and the trust they place in me to capture their most important moments. I bring passion and professionalism to every project, creating images that resonate and endure.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
As a photographer, I’ve amassed considerable experience capturing images throughout my life. One ongoing aspiration that propels me is to continually refine my technique and deepen my understanding, with the ultimate ambition of having a portrait featured on the cover of TIME magazine, symbolizing significant value and impact. Indeed, achieving such recognition would not only bring honor to me but also to my family, as it symbolizes a collective journey of dedication and passion for photography.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I envision a society where ample funds are raised to empower artists who lack financial resources to bring their innovative ideas to life. By supporting these creators, especially those exploring experimental art forms, we can fuel the development of artistic aesthetics and potentially pave the way for new trends to emerge. This investment not only fosters artistic growth but also enriches our cultural landscape, ensuring that diverse voices and perspectives contribute to the evolution of art for generations to come.
