We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sijie “Leslie” Liu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sijie “Leslie”, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
The film industry is currently undergoing a transformative phase with the widespread integration of AI. This technology is making significant strides across production, distribution, and audience engagement. The efficiency gains offered by AI, ranging from scriptwriting to post-production processes, have the potential to streamline workflows, ultimately reducing production costs and timelines. The utilization of deepfake AI in a film I worked on last year, portraying both young and old versions of characters, exemplifies the innovative possibilities AI brings to storytelling.
However, as with any major technological shift, there are valid concerns, particularly regarding job displacement. Traditional roles may face challenges as AI continues to evolve and handle tasks that were traditionally human-driven. The idea of using AI to clone and entirely replace actors is a contentious issue and is widely considered unacceptable within the industry.
Moreover, while AI can offer valuable insights, an overreliance on this technology to inform creative decisions will compromise the authenticity and uniqueness of artistic expression, and lead to formulaic content.
I think it is crucial for the industry to harness the benefits of AI for increased efficiency while also preserving the irreplaceable human touch in creative roles. The use of AI should be a tool that complements and enhances human creativity rather than a force that replaces it. Striking this balance will be pivotal in ensuring the continued innovation and artistic richness of the film industry.

Sijie “Leslie”, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a film editor with a dramatic writing background and a passion for storytelling through visual media. What I do is craft narratives by meticulously selecting and arranging footage, sound, and music to create compelling and emotionally resonant stories. My journey from China to the United States, transitioning from dramatic writing to film editing, has enriched my perspective and allowed me to bring a diverse range of storytelling techniques to my work. Whether it’s working on narrative films, or commercials with fashion brands like Cupshe and Thinx, or diving into the gaming world with clients like River Game, I thrive on the diversity of projects. This diversity allows me to continuously explore different editing and visual styles, adapting to the unique needs of each client and project.
What sets my work apart is not just the technical expertise but the storytelling sensibility that I bring to every project. I believe that every video, whether it’s a commercial, branding video, or narrative film, should tell a compelling story. I’m proud of my ability to create comprehensive on-screen narratives that resonate with audiences and leave a lasting impression.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
What excites me most about film editing is its ability to transform raw footage into a cohesive and impactful story. It’s like solving a complex puzzle where every piece contributes to the final picture. The magic of editing lies in its power to shape characters, perspectives, and emotions, as well as to establish a unique pace that keeps the audience engaged.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I feel that every journey in the creative field is unique, just embrace your individuality, stay passionate about your craft, and keep pushing yourself to grow.
