Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sig Ferrer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sig, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I grew up in Florida and spent a lot of my childhood spending time outdoors. I always had an affinity for nature and everything related to the botanical world. I moved to Western NY and took up houseplants as a hobby and a pleasant escape from the brutal winters. Wanting to fulfill a creative need, I read up everything I could about hosueplants, gathered all the plants and decorative materials and got to work – I got lost in the meditative art of creating miniature gardens. I made so many I ended up gifting to friends and family. Wanting to fulfill a financial need of additional income, I expanded my craft into a business. Prismatic Gardens has been a labor of love and has been in existence for over a decade.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Prismatic Gardens celebrates the exquisite and mystic beauty of the natural world and redefines home décor with the addition of unusual botanicals, terrariums, curiosities, minerals, found objects, antiquities and more. Prismatic Gardens transforms raw natural materials into a unique creation that will intrigue your mind, enamor your heart, and enrich your life.
Each design results from a magical process, whereby organic synergy draws distinctive elements into fine balance. Whatever the request, we meticulously hand-select all raw materials and use a discerning eye to arrive at a multi-textured design rich in nature’s alchemy.
As Swiss Psychologist Carl G. Jung so eloquently noted, “Natural life is the nourishing soil of the soul.” Prismatic Gardens is founded on a mission of uniting individuals with nature, bringing them closer to their native roots.
Each distinctive terrarium or botanical art piece we create is handcrafted in our studio. Raw materials are: grown or preserved naturally, acquired sustainably and meet our exacting ethical standards. In short, we take as much pride in process and end-product curation as we do personal character. Botanical elements are sourced from our own gardens or those of local vendors. Support materials are sometimes acquired from humane harvesters and trusted fabricators in The Philippines, Japan or North America.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The pandemic was a life pivot for all of us. It was a time where I needed to pivot my business as well. I was accustomed to teaching in-person workshops and I transitioned to teaching virtual workshops during the pandemic. My business exploded with opportunities for virtual teaching and I was able to grow my business while transitioning to this new change. Teaching virtually has allowed me to expand my business offerings and had provided me with more opportunities to grow my business.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I sell on Etsy and Amazon Handmade. They are both wonderful, but Etsy has been my favorite all along. Etsy has provided me with a platform to easily sell my terrarium creations all over the country. They bring the traffic to me and faciliate the process of making sales. I’ve been on Etsy for over a decade and I’m so grateful for their ecommerce platform.
