We recently connected with Sierrah Garcia and have shared our conversation below.
Sierrah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve always felt a pull to a holistically healthy lifestyle, especially once I became a parent. Starting a small business has been quite a bit different than my experience in music – I grew up in the industry, it’s never been something I’ve needed to “work” at, other than just making time for it. But when I decided to pursue the creation of beeswax products, I was amazed at all the things I’d need to learn before truly getting my feet off the ground.
Tapping into resources I trust, researching the sourcing of my ingredients, discovering the truly remarkable atomic structure of beeswax, making sure this venture was a positive move for the bee population – so many things.
The more I learned, the more I loved it.
Also, the more I learned – the more I became fiercely repelled by chemically formulated candles and skin products.
I think one drawback to this specific venture has been the uphill climb of teaching what I know to others. I want to be able to communicate about the pros of beeswax, the cons of other waxes, without overwhelming my customers.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My creative outlets are mostly two-fold – I’m a recording artist with FairVaux Record Label, and a beeswax enthusiast! I’m also married to my high school sweetheart and we have 3 beautiful children, our newest addition being a sweet boy adopted from Haiti.
We are active in our church and community and love being with family and friends in our spare time.
I was introduced to the music industry at the beginning of my life. My dad was a recording artist and toured multiple countries throughout his career. I’ve always had a deep love of music and that love intensified when I found a deeper connection to my faith. I’ve lead worship for almost 20 years and am now producing an album and tour on my own. It’s exciting, terrifying, and everything in between!
On the other end of the spectrum, I began cultivating healthy beeswax products at home while I homeschooled my children. I felt the need to research the air quality they were breathing and the products I was putting on their skin – the rest is history. I became so invested in the power of the bees and the breathtaking benefits that come from them.
As a creative, as a mom, as an artist – it’s been imperative that I show my children that pursuing their passions doesn’t have to stop once you’re a parent.
Priorities change, time management becomes a second job – but I hope and pray that I am able to set the example to my kids that they can love their family with their whole, entire heart and still maintain individuality while becoming the person they were designed to be.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
This is such a huge passion of mine. I feel that, as a society, we are so overwhelmed by mass consumerism that we forget the building blocks that hold us together.
In a time where we can shop the Big Box stores and order anything instantly online, I think it’s important to slow down, be intentional about the products we’re purchasing, and support the local economy instead of filling the already deep pockets of corporate America.
So, shop the farmers market. Go to the small-town vendor fair. Buy honey from a local apiary, Listen to new music from that indie artist. Buy a handmade item from someone who is putting care and intention behind their product.
It’s not just a benefit to them, it’s a benefit to you!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
For my products, my only goal is to create sustainable, pure beeswax products at a cost that is obtainable for most families. Having healthy air in your home should not be a luxury.
And with so many candles being sold and burned with proven carcinogens in their ingredients, I’m going to push the health of beeswax even harder.
No dyes. No artificial fragrance. Untreated wood wicks. Pure beeswax.
Simple and so very good for your body and the local bees!
