We were lucky to catch up with Sierra Jolivette recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sierra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
About two years ago, there was a time period where I was depressed. I wanted to occupy my time with healthy distractions. I started a new hobby creating candles, bath salts, and body butter. I noticed that every scent I was testing was a calming one: lavender, eucalyptus, chamomile, and peppermint . When the hobby turned into a business idea, I knew that I wanted to do more than just candles. I wanted to come up with a unique name that was catchy and wasn’t focused on solely candles. After a long day of work, I wanted to come home decompress with a relaxing scented candle, soak in the tub or take a hot shower, and journal. That makes me think of tranquility and chill vibes. Hence the name, Tranquil and Chill.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Tranquil and Chill is a selfcare line that includes products such as calming and uplifting scented candles and wax melts, calming linen sprays, bath salts, aroma therapy lotions, journals, and t.shirts.
After battling depression and anxiety, I learned that I was not practicing selfcare as I should. This led to me creating this selfcare like that started out as a hobby and now we’re going on two years in business.
What sets me apart is that my products are uniquely named and they are not your typical scents. For example, I have a candle named “Goodnight” and the scent is lavender and chamomile mixed together.
I am most proud of myself. For taking a chance on me and starting a business. I always told myself that I would never be a business owner because I’ll always be working. Shoutout to my therapist who helped me change my perspective on that thought. She told me, “ the business is yours, you work it how you want to work it.” Of course when I first launched that was not the case. I was working my regular job and then going hard for my business. I had to take a step back and ask myself, “how can you promote selfcare and not practice it?” Shortly after, I learned how to balance it all.
Have you ever had to pivot?
My first year in business was very challenging and had to make a few adjustments. Right before the holidays, the vendor that I ordered my jars from regularly were completely sold out and wouldn’t have more in stock until January of the following year. I panicked!! These were the jars I had been using. I had labels that fit those exact jars and everything. I tried searching other vendors but I discovered these jars were very popular. I was venting to a friend of mine one day and he said, “ why don’t you change your jars?” Remembering what my therapy told me in the beginning that this was my business, I work it how I want. I was open to this idea of switching up the jars. Thankfully, I found new jars, same size as the previous jars, and my customers were still happy!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I try to post on social media as much as I can to promote new products, sales, etc. I also like to participate in pop up events as a vendor throughout the year. I have met so many new people and gained new customers by attending these type of events. In addition, customer testimonials are a great way to spread the word and gain new customers. I have a designated area on my website where customers can leave a review.
