Sierra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I remember a year ago getting paid from a client the first time. I almost felt unworthy accepting a tip. I truly felt a burst of excitement that this could actually happen for me. From borrowing a camera for 8 months to purchasing my own. My dad overheard a co worker asking around for a good senior photographer. He immediately went to work, proudly showing them all of the photos I had taken in my free time. He believed in me before I even believed in myself. That truly kickstarted the inner belief that I could actually run with my dreams.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My brand name actually trails back to a reflection journal I wrote in 2020 during quarantine. I wanted to make a huge impact but wasn’t sure how to start. When I finally started my photography a year ago, I was back-and-forth on what to name my business. Realizing I had the name all along. Doing model calls myself for local photographers really showed me how it feels to be on the other side. The confidence it brings to your inner child is unmatchable. Seeing yourself the way others do is something I wanted to give back. My clients usually start off photoshoots, feeling a little uncomfortable for various reasons. We get into a groove and have the most amazing sessions! I started off really wanting to only do a specific category. I then realized with word-of-mouth I could branch out much bigger. I now do cover art for upcoming artists, branding, seniors, boudoir, lifestyle and much more. I wouldn’t have it any other way!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy in growing my clientele would certainly be word of mouth. Leaving a lasting impression for everyone I come into contact with helps spread the word faster than any advertising could ever do. Any chance somebody may be looking for a photographer you are the first person that comes to mind. Good experiences with human connections outlast any marketing tools.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A year ago, I was working a full-time job and hustling my Photography in on the side. A single parent of two, it was hard to find time on my already busy weekends. One day I was blindsided and let go from my job for having my own business. Aside from feeling blindsided and confused it was very defeating. I really had to pull myself back together and prove them wrong. The fall back propelled me forward to be more resilient. I worked even harder to rise above it. I’m in a much better position today than I was back then. Truthfully, it was the greatest thing that happened for my business.
