We recently connected with Sierra Hollabaugh and have shared our conversation below.
Sierra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My husband, David, and I are passionate about helping people find their favorite reads. It’s important to us that everyone feels welcome and comfortable in our store, and we work hard to have a wide variety of books across genres and topics. We began reading more during & after 2020 because we felt so bogged down by screens – they’re everywhere (in your hand, at your home, especially if you worked from home during the pandemic) – and getting back into reading helped calm our minds and regain that valuable mind space. We hope to help others start or get back into reading to also take back their valuable time from the endless scrolling. One piece of this is to find books that specifically speak to you (and it’s different for everyone!). This includes children’s books; we dedicate around one half of our store to children’s books because we so highly value the effects of reading for kiddos. We host story times and children’s authors in the hopes of helping to ignite that love of reading in children of all ages

Sierra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The Bookery Cincy began as a love for books and talking about books. We started an Instagram account to talk books and found a whole new community (bookstagram!) and met many local reading enthusiasts. We began recommending books, and people kept coming back, so we decided to open a website. The website did so well, so the next step was a physical store! Our local community has been so welcoming and supportive. We are passionate about connecting readers with their favorite books, and finding the reads that are just right for them. We don’t want people to feel they have to read what’s “trendy”; instead, find those books that are right for you! This is especially important when working with children and books. It’s so important to find children books they love in order to ignite and keep that love of reading alive.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
The most important advice I can give for social media is to be yourself; people can tell when you’re not genuine with them. When I write a post or share a story, I include bits of my life in them and my honest thoughts about the book. I believe being honest about what’s going on in your life or your thoughts on a book is the best way to relate to others.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Social media has been a wonderful way for customers to see new arrivals in the store, and to find out about events we host. Our website is also kept up-to-date, but the best responses have been from Instagram. Instagram has been wonderful for reaching our customers and keeping in touch. We receive messages about people’s thoughts on books or events, and this helps us know which books we should stock for our community.
