We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sierra Condon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sierra below.
Hi Sierra, thanks for joining us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Ive been super apprehensive about pursuing being a tattoo artist becuase of the amount of disdain that society has for people who choose to have untraditional jobs and that anything else that’s not a 9-5 is unsustainable or a silly little side job. A career doesn’t have to literally suck out your soul so you can carve out a shell to block out unnecessary stress that you have to endure becuase you’re in it for the money not the passion. I picked a career that makes me feel like I can relax knowing that I’ve let go of stressing about the ridiculous assumptions that society puts on people who are creative , like we’ll never have a real job , or make good money, or our skills are only good for making us a quick buck and it’s not sustainable when none of those are true . I chose to pursue being a tattoo artist because my passion keeps me from living my life on auto pilot. The amount of sacrifice that comes with being a tattoo artist makes my life feel more rich than any corporate 9-5.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Tattooing is one of the hardest industries to break into as a younger individual who’s exploring thier passions. Reality really hits you in the face when you decide that you want to be your own boss; there’s no HR department , you don’t get paid hourly to sit on your butt and do nothing and there is nobody making sure that you’re working and making money except for you. In a creative field , if you’re not passionate about your work it reflects on your performance and my clients will always get 110% of my effort because there is never a moment spent where I’m not perfecting my craft . I’m the most proud of being able to grow as an artist in an environment that I created for myself that is a comfortable space for me and my clients to get tattooed while I doodle with no distractions.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I love getting to work with my hands and create a space for myself that feels comfortable .
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Im always looking for ways to improve as an artist ,but I don’t really have an end goal , I’m just enjoying my time while im here and making friends along the way .
