We were lucky to catch up with Sierra Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sierra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
The best advise I have ever given a client and still do use as part of every consultation is to look at the entire picture and not just one small aspect. Elixir Aesthetics is a medical spa, hormone and weight loss clinic and there is a reason for that. When clients come in for skin care there is usually more issues than just their skin care regimen. Factors such as hormones, diet, hydration, inflammation etc. can all contribute to what we’re seeing on a skin level. Just as when a client comes in for hormone replacement therapy or weight loss services their skin can be effected which is when the other half of our business comes in to play. There is usually no single answer that can be the key to why a clients appearance such as loss of skin elasticity, hyperpigmentation, or acne can be arising. You have to look at the big picture of their health and habits to know how to best take care of yourself and for us to take care of our clients.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I fell into this industry by chance. I graduated high school very early and didn’t know what to do yet so I went to trade school. I began managing Salons and Spas shortly after and also working in medicine as a medical assistant as one of my jobs as I usually had multiple. I fell in love with both medicine and the beauty industry but my calling in what I was suppose to do didn’t come until much later. I was diagnosed with MS at 15 years old and in my early twenties decided since medication wasn’t working that I wanted to treat it naturally and this led to me finding out my hormones were completely off balance which explained the struggle with acne I had my entire life. With the combination of hormone replacement therapy, dietary changes, and my skin care regimen I got my skin clear and felt so much better. My MS attacks stopped as well and symptoms of MS weren’t an issue for me anymore either. Once my skin cleared I was left with pitted and pigmented acne scars from chin to forehead. The struggle of acne scarring seemed to be more difficult than the actual acne. While I had been in the industry for quite some time there was very little that actually seemed to help. Once I combined radio frequency microneedling, a proper skin care regimen, and keeping my health balanced that’s when I saw results and cleared up my acne scarring almost entirely.
This shift took my love of medicine and aesthetics and made it a much stronger passion wanting to help people with not just looking good but feeling good and helping clients connect the dots of how the big picture of health, skin, and technology all come together. Every client that has walked through our door that we have helped has been the best feeling and the reassured me that we are exactly where we are meant to be.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I don’t think, I know, that our growing reputation is from our incredible clients whom we are very lucky to have. For every business I have managed; I have done marketing for. Even my own business I do all the marketing myself and tried various marketing companies but where we get most of our clients is referrals. Marketing is absolutely a necessity but client satisfaction is even more of one. We wouldn’t be where we are today without them and for that I am grateful.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Listening. Listening to the client and what they’re telling you and having a full discussion with them about their wants, needs, struggles, concerns is where you will learn the most. Even with all my experience and certifications there are still questions or concerns that stump me and I have to do a deep dive on how to best solve the problem. Often times a series of events leading to a skin concern or symptoms matters but we tend to be so busy and rush through the discussion with the client we fail to gather all of that information and miss very crucial information of what could be causing this concern or how to better help. Taking time to stop and listen to your client and your target market is the key to success in your field.
