Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Siena Fluitt. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Siena, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about how you got your first non-friend, non-family client. Paint the picture for us so we can feel the same excitement you felt on that day.
I remember the beginning of my photography journey like it was yesterday, a lot of my first clients were unpaid and to gain experience. I had so much fun getting to create and edit these photos, I created a photography account almost immediately, and I was also a senior at my high school, so it was easy to get in with the high school seniors. My first client was a boy in the same grade as me who needed his senior photos done, after that I continue to get more and more business from seniors and couples in my area. It was a very fulfilling feeling to have scaled my business so quickly, so young.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi, my name is siena fluitt I am the owner of my own photography business. I call Sienamphoto. I’m 19 years old currently and I started my business at 17. At this time, I was very hesitant on what I wanted to choose for a college route/career route. You don’t realize how fast life hits you until you have to decide what career you want to go with by the time you’re done with high school photography came to me at just the right time in shortly after I started, I knew that I had found what I wanted to be my career. I’ve never been a very creative person and I’ve never had very many creative outlets so this career choice is a little bit surprising for the person I am, but I truly do love it, growing up I’ve been through a lot and something I realized along the way is that the most important thing is making sure that the memories are captured. Even when you think you look ugly, even when you think you look too big even when nothing is what you think is picture perfect. It’s always important to capture the memories because someday you will wish that you did. I just got into wedding photography the summer of 2024 so this will be my second wedding . Not only am I lucky enough to be booked out May through October for weddings, but I will be going to Italy, Mexico, Utah, Florida, New York, New Mexico, Washington etc. It’s always been a dream of mine to be able to travel so finding a career that makes that possible is such a blessing. I live in Eugene, Oregon, and throughout the week you can find me mostly at home with my three cats.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Being a full-time business owner definitely has moments where it’s hard to demonstrate resilience… It’s the end of wedding season and I have thousands and thousands of photos to Cull and edit, my emails and DMS are flooded and I can’t seem to make a post on Instagram. It becomes hard to get myself to do anything. being a photographer in a small town is always something that will be hard. There’s always someone you compare yourself to, there’s always someone new, and there’s always someone that may offer more than you, as a business owner I had to realize that a long time ago and decide that I was fine with that and I had so many amazing things to offer. Realizing that I bring so many things to the table for my clients and that I’ve worked for all that I have received and been blessed with in this industry.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think the most helpful thing with growing a reputation around a small town is realizing that not everyone will like your work and not everybody will respect you, but all you can do is show kindness to the people that do trust you enough to have you capture their amazing special moments. There’s been so many Wedding days where I’m not only the photographer, but I am running around, trying to make sure that the bride is under as least stress As possible, I think just going above and beyond to show your clients that you’re not just there As a job, but because you’re interested in their story, you’re interested in their family and you’re interested in making their dreams come true. It’s all about going above and beyond.
