We were lucky to catch up with Sic Owens recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sic , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Yeah I think about it all the time. Ive never had a job and dropped out in middle school to Pursue art and didn’t really have that high school experience but it wasn’t really essential to what I’m doing so I don’t really care. Everyday I just get reminded why I’m doing what I’m doing and who I do it for so that keeps me going. I just like to think there’s a alternative universe version of me that said f*ck that fashion shit and just went the school route & got a cool little 9-5 so that’s good enough for me
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
It’s just the same old story , Someone who just wants to create. As for the brand it all started in late 2016 where I was tired of seeing the same shit over and over again so my friends and I thought to ourselves if they can do it why can’t we. What sets us apart from most is that we actually care and I think it really shows in the work , everything with pure intentions. Not in it for the fab or quick cash or the title of being a “designer” I don’t even consider my self a fashion designer. All those labels like creative director , stylist and all that don’t mean anything all it does it box you in and in a way discredits you as a artist. Like when the Grammys did that tribute for Virgil and it said “hip hop designer” like the hell’s that about you know
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Just be yourself, It’s not hard.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Communication is everything , something I’m still learning to get better at. Don’t hesitate to address a situation when needed but it’s also how you address it as well. You could be telling someone the best advice with the best intentions but if it comes out like your just getting on their ass their not gonna wanna hear it. Everyone reacts differently to criticism so just approach them with some level of understanding. But definitely communicate is key and it keeps everyone on the same page.
