We recently connected with Siarra Morris and have shared our conversation below.
Siarra , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
Growing up, my relationship with my mom was complicated. She fought her own battles—surviving sexual abuse and struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. These challenges often pulled her away from being the mom I needed, leaving me with my own childhood trauma.
Yet, amid our struggles, my mom taught me something powerful: “Be a leader, not a follower.” Those words became my guiding light. They reminded me that I had the strength to forge my own path, even in a world that felt unforgiving.
Like my mom, I faced my own hardships. At 17, I was shot in the chest, narrowly missing my heart, and by 19, I was a single mother. I felt trapped in a cycle of trauma, burnout, and unhappiness. It wore me down, and I knew I had to change.
By my mid 20’s, I decided to let go of habits that harmed me. Instead of partying and drinking to escape my stress, I took long walks and hit the gym. I replaced toxic TV with uplifting shows, changed my music, and distanced myself from negative friends. I started yoga, journaling and practicing self-care, despite the criticism from those around me. But my mom’s words echoed in my mind: “Be a leader, not a follower.” I knew I had to trust my journey.
As I transformed my life, I discovered my personal power. I made the Dean’s List in college and landed a managerial position at a local shelter, where I empowered others facing their own struggles. I learned to lead with compassion and strength.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, I took a bold step and left my job to become an entrepreneur. I wanted to help others unlock their potential and take control of their lives thru holistic healing, which birthed my business “Yogi Vibezz”.
Reflecting on my journey, I see how my mom’s teachings shaped me. Her struggles taught me resilience and the power of healing. Today, I move forward by guiding others to find their own strength and leadership. No matter our past, we hold the power to create a brighter future.
Siarra , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Siarra “Divine” Morris, and I am a life coach and cultural wellness curator dedicated to empowering lives through innovative cultural wellness initiatives and events. My journey into this field is deeply rooted in my personal experiences with trauma and the lessons I learned from my upbringing. Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A powerful lesson I had to unlearn was the narrative that defined me as the “black girl from the hood” who had no dreams or aspirations beyond working myself to death while living in constant fear and stress. Growing up, I frequently encountered societal stereotypes that suggested my background dictated my future—a story that left little room for ambition, hope, or self-discovery. This narrative was reinforced by those around me, including peers and even well-meaning adults who believed that striving for a different life was unrealistic for someone from my circumstances.
Initially, I accepted this limiting belief as my reality. I worked relentlessly, convinced that hard work was my only path, drowning in the pressures of survival without taking the time to envision a bigger dream for myself. The stress and fear of not fitting into societal expectations weighed heavily on me, making it difficult to believe that there was any possibility for change. The idea that life could be different felt like a false dream, one that was “not in the cards for girls like me.”
However, my journey towards empowerment began when I realized that I had the power to redefine my story. It took deep introspection and a willingness to confront the fears and limiting beliefs that had held me captive for so long. I sought mentors, engaged in personal development, and immersed myself in environments that inspired growth and possibility. I learned that I could break free from the confines of that narrative and create a reality that aligned with my true aspirations.
The process of unlearning this limiting belief empowered me to set ambitious goals, not just for myself but for others in my community. It fueled my passion for becoming a cultural wellness curator and life coach, allowing me to guide others through similar journeys of self-discovery. I now advocate for the idea that dreams are not confined by one’s background; rather, they are limitless and can be shaped by one’s choices and mindset.
This transformative lesson continues to resonate in my work, as I strive to empower others to unlearn their own limiting narratives. I want everyone, especially those who share similar backgrounds, to realize that their past does not determine their future. We all have the inherent ability to rise above barriers and create a life rich with aspirations and possibilities. Embracing this new narrative has not only changed my life but has also inspired countless others to pursue their dreams fearlessly and unapologetically.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Other than training and knowledge, I believe that cultivating a strong sense of resilience and emotional intelligence is crucial for succeeding in my field as a cultural wellness curator and life coach. Resilience allows me to navigate the inevitable challenges and setbacks that come with entrepreneurship and community work. There are times when initiatives may not reach their intended audience or when funding for programs is scarce, but having the ability to adapt, learn from failures, and persist in the face of adversity is essential to driving meaningful change.
Emotional intelligence, on the other hand, enables me to connect deeply with the individuals and communities I serve. Understanding and empathizing with their experiences, struggles, and emotions fosters a genuine rapport and builds trust. This connection is vital in my work, especially when facilitating inner child healing and addressing complex issues within urban communities. When people feel seen, heard, and understood, they are more likely to open up and engage in the healing process.
Additionally, fostering an inclusive and collaborative mindset is also invaluable. Engaging with diverse perspectives and encouraging community participation enriches my initiatives, allowing them to be more responsive to real needs. It also empowers individuals and communities to take ownership of their healing journeys and fosters a greater sense of belonging.
