Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Siannie Jacobs. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Siannie, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Thanks for having me! Our mission at SJ Restorative Consulting LLC, is to empower communities through transformative approaches, particularly by implementing restorative practices that promote healing and growth. This mission is deeply personal to me, inspired by my experiences within the criminal legal system, particularly my work with the Department of Corrections. Seeing the significant racial disparities, especially impacting Black and Brown individuals, particularly youth, ignited my passion for this work.
SJ Restorative Consulting LLC is committed to helping organizations integrate equitable practices into their operations because we believe fairness and inclusivity are crucial for sustainable change. That’s what drives me every single day!
Siannie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, I’m Siannie Jacobs, Founder and Principal Consultant of SJ Restorative Consulting LLC, as well as an author and transformational coach. My passion is centered on empowering individuals, advocating for those affected by the justice system, particularly youth, and advancing Restorative Justice practices. I am driven by the belief that Restorative Justice offers a more compassionate and effective approach to addressing harm and fostering healing in our communities.
My journey into Restorative Justice began during my tenure as a Program Supervisor at the Department of Corrections, where I received training as part of an initiative led by the Vera Institute of Justice and MILPA. Restorative Justice, a relational approach to justice that seeks to repair harm by providing an opportunity for those harmed and those who take responsibility for the harm to communicate about and address their needs, became a cornerstone of my work.
At SJ Restorative Consulting LLC, we specialize in equipping organizations with a holistic approach and practical tools through customized, evidence-based workshops and training. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive framework for any organization—whether it’s in K-12 education, non-profit, government agency, team, or company—that seeks to integrate restorative practices/restorative justice.
We are committed to facilitating a transformative process that fosters organizational culture and dismantles the prison-to-school pipeline. By using restorative practices as an alternative to punitive, discriminatory discipline policies and implicit biases, we aim to repair harm and transform relationships.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Yes. One significant lesson I had to let go of was the belief that success is solely defined by pursuing traditional career paths related to my college degrees. Growing up, there was this idea that certain prestigious professions like law or medicine were the ultimate markers of success. However, over time, I came to realize that true fulfillment comes from aligning with one’s purpose, regardless of the conventional trajectory. While I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Public Administration, I’ve learned that nothing compares to the value of pursuing a path that deeply resonates with your personal calling.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
One of the most effective strategies for expanding our clientele has been prioritizing relationship building and networking. Building genuine connections with individuals and organizations has proven crucial in cultivating trust and rapport. Clients consistently express appreciation for the passion I bring to the work, which has played a significant role in attracting new clients. Additionally, word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied clients have been invaluable in expanding our client base, as they graciously recommend our services to others within their networks.
