We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shyterria Dixon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shyterria below.
Shyterria, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is a never ending journey, it also comes with plenty of high and low points. Becoming successful however takes strong dedication because it won’t always be easy, You’ll have days where you want to give up or everything you’ve worked for in that moment feels like it’s on a standstill but that’s when that drive for success kicks in. Success is not about how much money you make or how much you sell, it’s about knowing you stayed true and dedicated to your goals and achieved them.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My company Designer Wink has been in business for about 4 going on 5 years now. My journey has not always been easy, as for any start up business. At my younger age of 18, I decided I wanted to become a lash tech but money was always tight for me. One day working at my local hair store, I stumbled across an envelope with the exact amount of money I needed for my class. That moment started a fire in me that has yet to burn out. I’ve always been told that I am blessed so I make sure I bless others. Designer Wink does not only offer eyelash services but it helps future entrepreneurs kick start their business as well. Mentorship is one of my greatest achievements because I wish I had someone like me when I began my business years ago. Along with that I offer classes for a reasonable price as well as sell Ebooks to guide them in the proper direction of their lash career. The stepping stones that I have been given will allow me to further my path into being an overall influencer for those who can relate to my journey. I believe my story is testimonial and can influence people to never give up, that’s why I always thank God for placing that envelope on the floor that day at work.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is one of the major keys to building a strong platform for your business in this day in age. I always tell people to find your niche and know what your audience wants to see! I’ve been in business for a while now and i’ve noticed that my craft speaks for itself, so sometimes posting my work doesn’t bring in as many views. I started to map out a content plan for myself that would help the growth of my business. That plan pointed me in the direction of teaching, people always want to be informed and also relatable videos. Those two points generated a new audience that brought in new followers, customers, clients and more. Another tip is to be yourself and show your personality! People love to feel as if they have a personal connection with you, it reels them in sometimes before the service or product that you offer! Showcase who you are on social media but keep it professional and within your niche!
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
My famous Wednesday Sale! I’ve been running this sale for years and it has kept me booked and busy ever since. One day talking to a long term friend named Deandra, we were thinking of a master plan to boost my business. She said “You should be known for sales.” at the time I was doing giveaways and holiday specials but something about this seemed different. I answered back “I can do discount codes! New clients and birthday deals!” that’s where I also started my year round discount specials. then it hit me! I added on to our conversation “I should have a sale day where my clients can get any set for a certain price.” both of our eyes got big! I knew that this idea was going to expand my business. I began to map out my plan, at first it was $55 for any set and I chose Wednesday because that was the day I was off during the week. My clientele increased from that point forward! Gradually I’ve increased the price, some clients didn’t like it but it didn’t stop me! Every wednesday for about 3 years now i’ve been completely booked to the point that clients have to schedule a Wednesday appointment weeks or months in advance.
