We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shyla Collier a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shyla, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Being a business owner is extremely difficult and time consuming. It definitely takes hard work and determination. Although it is stressful at times, I would never trade it for anything. There are many perks to owning your own company. It is very empowering to look at the empire that you have created. I love helping others take their business to the next level. I also value always being there for my son and making my own schedule. I am not sure that I would ever go back to a corporate job again.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Luckily, there was not a ton of start-up costs compared to many other businesses. I did have some money saved up to put towards it. The corporate marketing job that I was working at gave me a severance pay to start my business and even became my first client, which was generous. The Chamber of Commerce used my services right away and even paid for my business license. Everything worked out very nicely.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I absolutely love Facebook. I was one of the very first profiles on Facebook since I was in college at the time and it was for college students. It has been the best tool for me. My first business was one of the first business pages also. I have a strong background when it comes to marketing on the platform. Utilizing my personal page, business page and the groups frequently when I first started Premiere is how I built up my following quickly. Consistency is key to everything.
