We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shyann Brinson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shyann below.
Shyann , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I started off doing photography in 2015, my first ever shoots were of friends and relatives out of my house. I finally decided to take photography a little more seriously after changing my major in college from nursing to fine arts. in 2018 I officially established my business and got my first ever studio. Photography was always my side gig, I would shoot durning any free time I had. In 2021 I decided to give photography a shot full time, but shortly ventured into the filed of teacher. Years and numerous jobs later, the summer of 2022 I went full time with photography. I finally felt like I was in a place to really give my business my all, and also knew I would never know the full potential of my business as long as I was doing on the side.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Photography was just a hobby for me, it was the people around me who really pushed me to the point of where I am now. Photography is my main service but I also provide graphic services such as web and logo designs, business cards, flyers and pretty much anything else that can be made in photoshop. I am most proud of my growth, I’ve learned so much over the years not only within my field but also about my clients. Everything I do I do on my own which is very challenging but also rewarding at the same time. Everyone who books with me gets a personal experience that keeps them coming back for more!
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I have always been very smart about my business money. Keeping it separate from my personal ,only and also being disciplined enough to only spend it on things for my business. I have funded my business 100% since day one. By prioritizing my money I’ve been able to go years without any loans and keeping afloat with the necessities of my business.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Definitely social media or word of mouth. Majority of my new clients say they found me on Facebook or knew someone personally who had booked with me previously.
