We were lucky to catch up with Shyam Kumar Nair recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shyam Kumar, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Film has always been my dream. A dream that I was never able to pursue due to my family pressure for doing 9-5 job and they thinking about (log Kya kahenge- “What people will say”). Taking risk was not my cup of tea, until the day I realized that my life is not going anywhere with this 9-5 job, and I am going to end up like every single one of those who just keeps on dreaming and move on with their regular work. So finally, on 20th October 2017 I left 3.5lac PA paying job and started my hunt as a filmmaker. In 2019, I tried doing my first feature concept to pitch to producers, which failed after spending countless hours of mine and others and all my savings. The only good thing to happen with that project was, I found my soulmate and my rest half, the girl who makes me feel constantly that whatever happens, happens for the good, the way she happened to me. My girl – Akhila. After marriage started my real journey towards the dream – Film. She along with my parents became pillars of my support. Off course my parents were left with no choice rather than letting me pursue my own dream with a condition that, whatever I want to achieve I should show them in a year that I am capable of doing it. Finally in year 2022 started, my journey towards film with zero savings in my pocket with my financial backbone being my girl, who is working tirelessly to make sure there is no shortcomings in my journey towards my dream. THE BIGGEST RISK OF MY LIFE.
Shyam Kumar, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a cinematographer, director, writer and an editor as well. I have learned everything online, all by myself. I spend everyday learning new techniques and experimenting new camera angles. I even watch movies, all of them, the hits and flops to learn what made the movie so. I’m proud that I have enough patience and courage to fight for my way to fulfill my dreams. I believe that one must constantly endeavor in order to achieve success.
One of the proudest moments was when one of our horror short films ‘The Evil’ got officially selected to a national film festival and was also the official finalist of one international film festival. I just can’t explain how happy I was.
For my client or producer who is ready to invest on my ideas, I have only one thing to say, give me a chance to speak once face to face with you and you will hear the best stories of your life.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to show this world the film universe of my own. I want to take my audience on a journey like no other. Film is not just about visuals or story; it’s about showing the world that dreams do come true when your stop thinking and start working. Finally, I want to bring the first Oscar to Indian cinema.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Believe in your instincts. Just keep on working towards your dream no matter what others have to say, because every journey has its own purpose, and you never know until you do it. So, keep on working without expecting the results.
