We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shuyi Qiu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shuyi below.
Alright, Shuyi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I started as a graphic designer in the first place when I came to New York. I was shocked by the inclusion of this amazing city. Then as I dived deep into this field, I found more fun of color and vivid pictures to tell the story. I am really thankful for my bachelor’s degree as a graphic designer at SVA. It gave me a different way to see the world. The challenge at SVA established a solid foundation as an artist to pursue my future career.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As I grew up, I always wanted to use visual ways to show my inner world and tell others how I may present myself. After two years of searching for a career as an industrial designer in Taiwan. Then I decided to continue as a graphic designer at SVA. four years of deep learning in graphic design, I found I am more interested in motion, especially 3D, also a combination of 2D and 3D. I provided unique resolutions for brand promotion and vivid advertisements for their product. In order to get more familiar with the brand. I will first come out with a mood board with creative writing and thinking. Then chat with clients to settle down the main idea for further styleframes. After the round, I will have more knowledge of the core of the brand or product. A deep understanding of the brand and the client’s needs is the key to the whole process.
Environment plays a key part in my work. Cause environment can emphasize the idea not through a straight way but with a clever presentation to show the brand or product.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The graphic serves as a fundamental part of my whole design process. The rules that I learned, like contrast, scale and so on will first give me the basic construction for the project, then With the solid base I can play with different angles to twist the idea in 2D and even in 3D. From still images to moving one, base rules are crossing each other.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want to tell my inner world and my way of seeing the earth in a vivid visual way. By representing myself, I could exchange my ideas with society in an interesting way, which is a more efficient method through visual elements.
