We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shuntoya Chatman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shuntoya below.
Shuntoya , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
The most defining moment in my professional career is becoming a self-published author this year. My book “Grieve with Grace” which is now available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble can be purchased. Grieve with Grace is a realistic and thought-provoking book that was created to support individuals in navigating the journey of grief. Grief is an intense and challenging myriad of emotions to unpack along with process. The idea for this book was born after experiencing a difficult season in my life, the unfortunate passing of my oldest son. I had to change my perception when it comes to death and embark on the difficult path of healing. My grief journey has not ended but I have gained tools along the journey to improve my emotional state. I made the conscious decision to share my personal struggles along with triumphs in accepting grief in this book.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than 12 years’ experience in the human service/psychotherapy field. I have earned a Bachelor’s degree in Community Health and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Georgia College & State University. I also earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Valdosta State University. I am the owner of Wholistic Counseling Services, LLC and online adjunct Instructor with Georgia Military College. I reside in the State of Georgia. I am married and the mother of three children, one child deceased. I am a mental health advocate and educator when it comes to sharing positive messages concerning the benefits of holistic therapy. I have witnessed personal accounts of individuals healing from trauma, emotional pain, and eliminating irrational thoughts. I am so grateful for the platform that I have due to the work that I perform in serving others. For more information, my website address is www.mywholisitccounselingservices.com. My IG and Facebook accounts are @WholisticWayTherapy.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I believe my authenticity and optimism are infectious. I pride myself in meeting people where they are and not forcing them to change. Therapy is a process that takes time and a willingness for a client to accept. A client’s personal growth should happen organically without being forced. I want my clients to feel heard and I make sure not to push my personal agenda on them. I am very transparent when it comes to my limitations on some subject matters and have no problem disclosing uncertainty on a specific topic. I am also aware that I cannot serve every one that reach out to me seeking treatment

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Just showing up consistently and being genuine when it comes to my concern for individuals’ wellbeing are important. I am a realist and very straightforward when it comes to offering support. I also want to see people do well and will rally with those that are ready to do their healing work. I feel that the work that I am performing is lifesaving along with life changing. I always have an attitude of gratitude when it comes to remaining in the industry of psychotherapy. I don’t take for granted the work that I do and believe that it is my ministry.
