We were lucky to catch up with Shunta Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shunta, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name of my company is Karrington’s Kreations. It’s named after my daughter Karrington. My daughter is a firehouse. She’s very determined and driven.. no is not an answer for her.

Shunta, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In 2012-2013 I had a coworker ask me out of the blue to make a cake for her mom’s 70th birthday. And I looked at her with a puzzled disposition on my face because I had no clue as why she would ask me to make a cake. We went back and forth about making this cake. I expressed to her to her that I didn’t make cake nor I had no tools, utensils or anything to be make this cake. Please understand I was not a baker. She said I know you can do it and walked away.. she would not take no for an answer. So now I have a huge task before and now I have to produce a product. I began to frequent my local cake decorating store may times within a month to buy products and also pick the brain of the associates at the store. I asked several questions each time I visited.
After I had all the tools I needed I began to work. I did the absolute best I could.. mind you this was a three tiered cake.
The cake looked horrible I was so defeated but in my mind it was supposed to look better than it did.
I delivered the cake and told my coworker that it was not pretty. She looked and said it’s fine.
Later that night she called to express her thanks and to tell me that it was not one piece of cake left.
I was so shocked and excited. And I said if I have the taste down the decorating is something that can be practiced.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think word of mouth is the best thing that has helped my business tremendously. When people experience good customer service and a good product they are willing to share.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A time in which I had to pivot was when my husband asked me did I want to be a vendor in the FedEx forum as the only sweet vendor. The experience was phenomenal seeing and meeting many different people and them experiencing kreations was one of a kind. But as the team went on a decline so did the attendance and so did my business. So I had to leave the forum and went back to custom cakes.
