Shubham, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
As an independent cinematographer deeply immersed in the dynamic world of filmmaking, I’ve had a front-row seat to some significant trends that are reshaping our industry. Here’s my perspective, along with a memorable anecdote that captures the essence of one of these trends:
The rise of streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and others has transformed the way films reach audiences, providing indie filmmakers like me with a direct route to a global stage. This trend has unlocked an incredible array of opportunities for independent creators, offering us the chance to showcase our work to a vast and diverse audience. In 2019, “The Irishman,” directed by Martin Scorsese, made waves by choosing to premiere on Netflix. Scorsese’s decision to collaborate with a streaming giant signaled a seismic shift in how even the most established filmmakers were embracing new distribution avenues.
Independent film festivals have been gaining prominence, serving as a vital platform for unique and unconventional storytelling. These festivals have become a lifeline for indie filmmakers like me, offering us a chance to gain recognition, secure distribution deals, and connect with passionate cinephiles. Sundance Film Festival has always held a special place in my heart. In 2020, “Minari” premiered at Sundance and went on to earn critical acclaim and several Oscar nominations, showcasing the festival’s enduring influence on independent cinema.
Increasingly, independent filmmakers are turning to crowdfunding platforms and digital marketing to fund their projects and build a loyal audience. This trend empowers filmmakers like me to maintain creative control, engage directly with our supporters, and bring our visions to life. The 2014 indie sensation “Kung Fury” was a testament to the power of crowdfunding. Director David Sandberg used Kickstarter to finance the film’s over-the-top action sequences, demonstrating that grassroots support could bring a wild cinematic vision to fruition.
Independent filmmakers like me revel in the unparalleled creative freedom to explore unique and daring storytelling.
Digital platforms allow us to engage directly with our audiences, cultivating a loyal fan base. Independent film festivals and digital communities offer invaluable opportunities to connect with fellow filmmakers and industry professionals.
Being an independent cinematographer is about embracing these challenges and seizing the opportunities that come our way. It’s a journey fueled by creativity, resourcefulness, and an unwavering passion for the art of storytelling.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Shubham Gosalia, a seasoned cinematographer with a rich five-year journey in the world of visual storytelling. My career commenced in the vibrant city of Mumbai, where I initially discovered my deep passion for cinematography while working on a short film. This experience ignited a creative spark that has propelled me on an incredible journey, taking me from the bustling streets of Mumbai to the dynamic film industry of Los Angeles.
Throughout these transformative years, my work has encompassed a wide spectrum of projects, including feature films, music videos, short films, and commercials. Each project has provided a unique canvas to push the boundaries of creative expression and craft visuals that resonate with audiences on an emotional level.
Two of the many projects that hold a special place in my heart are:
1. **”As Far As We Know”**: This project presented an exhilarating challenge that allowed me to delve deep into the art of cinematography. It encouraged me to explore innovative techniques and cinematic approaches, resulting in visuals that not only enhanced the storytelling but also elevated the overall impact of the project.
2. **”Nadaniya – Siddhant Bhosle”**: This endeavor was a true fusion of music and visuals, demonstrating the profound influence of storytelling through the medium of film. It was an exciting opportunity to blend my passion for music with cinematography, resulting in a music video that perfectly complemented the mood and energy of the music.
What truly sets my work apart is an unwavering commitment to excellence and a relentless pursuit of innovation. I firmly believe that each frame in a project should not merely be visually stunning but also contribute significantly to the storytelling process. This dedication has led me to embrace cutting-edge technologies and techniques, consistently pushing the boundaries of what is achievable in the world of cinematography.
One of my proudest achievements is the remarkable journey itself — starting with a short film in Mumbai and progressing to collaborate on feature films and high-profile projects. It’s a testament to the transformative power of passion, dedication, and the boundless potential of visual storytelling.
For potential clients, collaborators, and fellow enthusiasts, I want you to know that I am deeply committed to breathing life into your creative visions. Whether it’s a feature film, a music video that needs to capture a particular mood, or a commercial aimed at conveying a brand’s message, I’m here to transform ideas into captivating visuals.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
As a filmmaker, my networking strategy boils down to a blend of genuine passion and authentic connection. It’s not just a professional pursuit; it’s a journey intertwined with my love for storytelling and cinematic artistry.
**Persistence** is my daily mantra. I keep pushing forward, attending film festivals, mixer events, and yes, even striking up conversations at the most unexpected places – from the local gym to a bustling county fair. This city, where every corner holds a potential connection, has been my playground.
**Confidence** is my silent ally. It’s that little spark that drives me to introduce myself to fellow filmmakers, actors, or industry professionals. It’s not about boasting but sharing the excitement for our shared craft.
Being **real** is my core principle. Authenticity is my currency. I’ve learned that people in the industry value honesty, and I bring my true self to every encounter. Whether it’s discussing the latest indie film or a technical challenge on set, I’m passionate and genuine.
I’m not just seeking business cards or LinkedIn connections; I’m seeking **real connections**. My networking isn’t transactional; it’s about forming bonds. I cherish the moments when my fellow creatives become friends, collaborators, or mentors.
But it doesn’t end there. Building these relationships is only the beginning. I understand that delivering quality work and being a reliable partner is equally vital. Filmmaking is about trust, and I aim to be the filmmaker others can count on.
In this ever-evolving industry, where opportunities often arise from the most unexpected places, I thrive on building a network that’s as diverse and unique as the stories I want to tell. My network is not just a means to an end; it’s a web of support, inspiration, and shared dreams. And as a filmmaker, I find beauty in the journey of forging these connections, knowing they can lead to extraordinary collaborations and unforgettable stories on the silver screen.

Any advice for managing a team?
As a cinematographer deeply entrenched in the film industry’s demanding whirlwind, I’ve cultivated a personal approach to team management that centers around fostering a positive environment and sustaining team morale. This journey has illuminated several core principles that guide my actions on set.
First and foremost, I believe in **leading by example**. My unwavering commitment, work ethic, and boundless enthusiasm set the tone for the entire team. When I radiate dedication and passion for my craft, it becomes contagious, motivating team members to bring their best.
**Effective communication** is paramount. Every team member must clearly understand their roles and responsibilities. Encouraging them to voice their ideas and concerns creates an environment where everyone feels valued.
Recognizing the taxing nature of our industry, I emphasize **realistic expectations** and efficient time management. Pushing the team excessively only leads to burnout and low morale.
Regular breaks are not just a luxury; they’re a necessity. Despite the demanding pace, I schedule short breaks for the team to recharge physically and mentally.
Efficient organization is vital. I ensure equipment readiness before shooting, reducing stress and enabling creative focus.
In addition to logistics, I prioritize **bonding sessions**. Team-building activities create unity and enhance morale.
Acknowledgment and appreciation are key. Expressing gratitude and recognizing contributions with a simple “thank you” strengthen team bonds.
Facing challenges together fosters resilience. Flexibility, self-care reminders, and celebrating achievements round out my approach.
In essence, my strategy combines dedication to a positive atmosphere with effective organization and bonding sessions, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to produce exceptional work.
