We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shreyans Zaveri. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shreyans below.
Alright, Shreyans thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project for me has been my short film “If Only.” I was learning some new software with my friend and this film just presented itself to me, fully formed and ready in my head.
If Only is a short film that follows the journey of a dead whale. The whale rises from the waters and flies away towards the skies. It rises above it’s previous life and goes upwards to be united with it’s family.
It was really personal to me, this story. I had been whale watching and when I saw these giant creatures, a calming energy swept over me. They were all around us, these whales. Gentle giants, playing and swimming in the waters. When I later looked up their numbers on the internet, I realized that they were being hunted for their flesh. I was appalled! Such magnificent creatures being killed, for what?
That is when I made the film. I was able to collaborate with societies that are fighting illegal whale hunting and my film was used to leverage that very cause. I hope I can save whales and other marine life with the help of this film.
Overall it turned out to be the most meaningful project for me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I come from Mumbai, India. I was born and grew up there. There I worked independently with various big clients. I dabbled in photography, game design, 3D animation and visual effects. My educational background is in Biology and I absolutely love the sciences. As I wanted to learn more about visual effects and their application, I moved to the USA to pursue my Masters in Visual Effects. From there I worked as an independent artist. I worked on many film, tv and commercial projects.
I started moving more towards production and editing as those are the projects that came my way.
Some of the most prominent clients that I have worked with are Google, NASA, HP, EA Sports, Made in Space, Mercedes Benz, Conde Nast and many more. I also enjoyed working with some celebrity clients like Steve Wozniak (Apple co-founder), Eric Schmidt (Google CEO), Fred Haise (Apollo 13 astronaut), Joe Pavelski (NFL) and other such leaders.
I work as a director, director of photography, editor and producer on multiple projects.
Apart from the technical side, I really consider myself to be a storyteller. I write books in the fiction/ fantasy genre. I like to craft the story from scratch. It is fulfilling to delve deeper into the essence of a story and extract that.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It is always the connection. I am big on energy and I feel like I carry the energy of a story forward. Films, tv, commercials whatever it is, it only works if the intent and the energy is right. One can deploy all the technology in the world to make a good looking piece of art but without the intent and the energy it just falls flat. This is the most rewarding aspect of being an artist. To be able to delve into someone’s vision or world and then bring that to the final piece. The way the audience reacts and the way they feel because I was able to successfully bring that forth is what keeps me going. It is that reward.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
As for resources I’d highly suggest reaching out to a mentor early on. See who wants to mentor you and if you can get in touch. It really helps to have someone like that by your side. Questions will pop up with time. Insecurities will show up and you will question yourself. Those are the times that you’ll really need a mentor who can be by your side and support you like a rock. The other resource is to work in multiple positions early on. Get a feel of it all and see what you like, experiment and fail and do not worry about what anyone thinks. It is your journey and there is only one right way to make ut and that is your right way.
