We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shreyaa Sumi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Shreyaa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I always wanted to make my career in performing arts right from my teenage. I grew up watching America’s Next Top Model. That’s when I realized what ”representation” means inspite of cultural background. Art has always ignited a fire in me, whether it’s modeling, being an influencer creating beauty and fashion content, pageantry, acting, or anything in between, I wanted to have a career where I can live out my passion and purpose out loud. Reflecting on this journey, I have come to appreciate the importance of balance. By juggling multiple commitments, I have learned to be adaptable, efficient, and resourceful.
Shreyaa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In my diverse roles as an International Model, Influencer & a Beauty Queen representing the Asian-American community at Mrs. Universe winning the Title Mrs. Universe Asia USA 2022, Brand Ambassador, Actress and Director associated with Mrs.Universe organization, I have had the privilege of making a significant impact across various domains. I hold an Honorary Doctorate, Ph.D. in Media & Fashion from Delaware. Apart from beauty pageants and fashion shows, I have been featured on various magazine covers, Brand shoots, E-commerce and print shoots. I have collaborated with numerous beauty and fashion brands. My journey has taken me far and wide, earning multiple awards as a best performing artist in various roles leading to recognition and accolades from different corners of the globe.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Only a performer or an artist knows how much learning and challenges that goes behind to acquire a set of knowledge to succeed in the modeling or any other creative industry. Art is a form of an expression. Society often views creative jobs as a hobby which is not of any value, as if it does not require skills, time and dedication like any other career. In my suggestion to encourage artists to thrive in today’s world, society needs to change their perspective on how they view creatives, they should try to understand that to an artist, what they do means everything. Great ideas originate from imagination. It is the power of imagination that propels us forward, enabling us to innovate and inspire. “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there will ever be to know and understand.” Society should give artists and creatives the space and freedom to explore and discover. Artists can also support each other with collaborations and networking by uplifting each other. Don’t betray your dreams for the sake of fitting in. Dream big! Dreaming is one of humanity’s greatest gifts. As we continue to navigate the complexities of the modern world, let us remember to nurture and celebrate the imaginative minds that have the potential to shape our collective future.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being a creator is to see that you’ve inspired others, not just influence but having left an impact. I receive messages and testimonials all the time from my fans, followers and supporters telling me I’ve inspired them to broaden their creativity by including more of their own talents to display to the world. It is enriching when people are truly able to connect with me and relate to me; Also, when they feel confident enough to pursue their dreams too. When someone says that they are motivated in the right direction by seeing my journey of achievements beyond boundaries and it encourages them to never give up on their dreams and that’s the most rewarding thing for me.
