We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shondricka Carter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shondricka , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the early days of establishing your own firm. What can you share?
In 2013, I developed a business plan to start a nationally known tax company. I started my company Carter Capital right out of undergrad. The main steps I took when I started was pretty much what I learned in college such as write a business plan, apply for funding and of course get started. I don’t want to just answer your questions; I want to take you on the journey from the beginning stages. So imagine being a non-traditional college student, single teen mom, working two jobs, maintaining a household and juggling entrepreneurship. I’m sure that explains some key challenges I faced. When I decided to take Carter Capital full-time, I had to become the boss not the worker. I was working from home for six years running my virtual tax office by myself. By 2018 my clientele was steady enough for me to invest in an office space. I got a deal on a suite worked had my office there for a year then in 2019 leased a 3-room office for Carter Capital. With the new space I was able to finally implement the business plan I’d written six years prior; hiring a team/employees, created standard operating procedure’s and long team business goals were reached. Some things I would have done differently are taken advantage of my credit earlier and getting a storefront/team sooner rather than later. My advice for young professionals considering starting your own firm is DO IT. Do it your way! I started with 0 clients too and now I have thousands worldwide. I built Carter Capital with a vision no one could see but me through plans, strategies and execution.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Of course, I am the 1 and only Shondricka Carter; Mom, wife, Serial CEO, 3x best selling author and wealth development mogul. I own Carter Capital PLLC the #1 24-hour wealth development firm and institute.
I assist individuals/business owners with leveraging their finances on their wealth journey.
Our services include tax preparation, business registration, credit restoration and bookkeeping/accounting. Our services are geared towards individuals and entrepreneurs. We also offer courses and books as DIY resources.
We solve financial issues for entrepreneurs and financial literacy for individuals. I am most proud of helping tax professionals earn unlimited income in 90 days. Another accomplishment we’re proud of is helping small businesses secure almost $4M in business funding, building business credit and helping our clients becoming homeowners. I am also super proud to be the curator of the wealth development summit we are taking international this year Taxes in Tulum where we will cover strategies to build wealth.
Today I am forever grateful for god strategically building my table and hiring my team.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A story of resilience wow. Sure. Well we all know entrepreneurship is such an up & down journey. In 2020, a year after I open the doors to my office. While working tirelessly on my goals. I was in the middle of selling my home to purchase my dream home. The pandemic happened and I had to close the doors of my office because the world shut down. The buyers of my home at the time were ready to go to closing (but my dream home wasn’t move in ready) so I found myself living in my 900 sq feet office. Due to the fact that covid came around IRS extended tax season to July ( 90 extra days). The bright side was no clients could come in to the office and I was accustomed to working from home so mentally it was easy but it was very uncomfortable. During that time, I became more determined. I was able to become a published author, a restaurant co-owner and of course like many of you a home school teacher for my kids lol.
This experience gave me the no excuses mindset that I have now. I thank God I didn’t fail the test I had to take to get where I am today!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn. The more you work the more money you’ll make. I use to say “no one is going to outwork me” until I realized working more wasn’t giving me the desired results. Now I understand how my money and investments work harder and not me physically. The other lesson in that was multiple streams of income didn’t mean multiple businesses.
For example; Carter Capital PLLC started almost ten years ago with only one stream of income which primarily was tax preparation, as we evolved we added services (streams of income) such as credit repair, business registration, courses, events. You see where I’m going with this. When embarking on your entrepreneurship journey do not develop the no days off mentality. Create streams of income that will lead to the success of your venture.
