Shonda , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
In the midst of the chaos brought on by Covid, I found a spark of creativity that ignited a whole new chapter in my life’s journey. With over two decades as a hairstylist under my belt, suddenly finding myself with unexpected free time, I remembered a vision I once had – to launch my very own custom sock company.
Years prior, the idea had lingered in the back of my mind, waiting for the right moment to flourish. Armed with just an iPad and Apple Pencil I sketched out three unique designs, fueled by passion and determination despite my lack of resources and knowledge in the realm of sock creation. I delved into the depths of Google, reaching out to various manufacturers until I discovered one that resonated with me, paving the way for samples of each design to land in my eager hands.
The waiting felt like an eternity, though in reality, it was merely a couple of weeks of eager anticipation. During that time, I immersed myself in the intricacies of the sock business, unraveling the threads of marketing strategies and more. When the tangible embodiments of my creativity finally arrived, I was filled with an unparalleled sense of elation. With my husband by my side, both supporter and sock model extraordinaire, we embarked on a spontaneous Mad Cool photoshoot, doing our best to capture the essence of our brand so that we could share them to social media.
In the whirlwind of establishing an online presence, navigating the intricacies of social media marketing, and making crucial decisions on sock materials and design intricacies, I took a leap of faith. Setting up the LLC, crafting a website, orchestrating photoshoots with the samples at hand – I forged ahead with unwavering determination. As the first design of Mad Cool materialized before me, I seized the moment, capturing images to add to the website and Instagram, introducing the world to the vibrant spirit of Mad Cool.

As an avid fashion enthusiast, my passion for styling my husband sparked an innovative idea. Our trips to Urban Outfitters, where I carefully curated unique outfits and matched them with vibrant socks, inspired me to create my own line of trendy, conversation-starting socks. Each purchase of quirky socks with playful sayings or eye-catching prints fueled my determination. I firmly believed in my ability to enter the sock industry, knowing that others have succeeded in this venture before.
My vision for Mad Cool socks transcends mere fashion; I aspire to create a range that caters to individuals of all styles and personalities. From serving as icebreakers for the introverted to becoming must-have accessories for the fashion-forward, I aim to offer something for everyone. Above all, inclusivity lies at the core of my brand ethos. I strive to make every customer feel seen, represented, and empowered through my diverse and trendy sock designs.
How did you build your audience on social media?
In the midst of the ongoing journey of building, I’ve experienced numerous obstacles and victories, each teaching me the invaluable lesson of consistency, product visibility, and active engagement. This year, I’m incorporating more of these strategies into my approach. I firmly believe that by authentically showcasing your product and actively engaging with others, you can win the world over with the same passion you have for your creation.”
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
In my creative journey, I sketch each design by hand, carefully select materials, choose Pantone colors, and craft unique packaging designs. Although I dream of manufacturing my own products one day, for now, I rely on trusted partners. After thorough research and weighing the options, I found the perfect manufacturer to bring my vision to life. Collaboration with manufacturers has taught me the value of clear communication and knowing exactly what you want. Research is key in this industry, paving the way for successful partnerships and exceptional creations.
