We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shon Ski. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shon below.
Shon , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I worked on, is my debut album. Somewhere Out There, really forced me to see my ideas through. I had so much going on in my life. At that particular time, I made a promise to myself to finish what I start. I grew as an artist and a woman during that process. It showed me how strong I was. I lost my job at the time, I had drama in my life and relationships. Looking back I know God blessed me with the gift of faith, to not give up on myself. My first project is definitely my fourth child.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I first got into my industry about 7 years ago maybe. I was heavy into media, like radio and around the time it’s like people saw an artist in me. I always was asked to rap and I never backed down from an opportunity to get busy. So I did, one night in a parking lot we spitting, and I didn’t realize I was being recorded. After that, I started getting booked for gigs in DC. I’d like to think as an artist I provide an experience to the listener. I love to perform and it’s a way for me to express myself and connect with people on a deeper level. It means so much because it’s my dream. I’m honestly most proud of how far I’ve come. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I’d be living out what I love to do. Perseverance can take you very far, and Gods grace. What I want people to know about my brand is it’s real and raw. My music, visuals, social media content, merch. It comes from a place of authenticity, my soul and I wish to leave behind a legacy. Inspire others and live forever through my music.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew about financial resources (grants, loans, workshops). It’s extremely helpful because these endeavors can become costly, and you learn very quick you have to work smart in order to sustain.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the way you touch the people. The messages and support I get makes me so emotional because for a long time I didn’t know anyone cared. More importantly that people feel the way I do, about what I convey in my music it’s beautiful and I’m so grateful to be an inspiration to people.
