We recently connected with Shiyu Chen and have shared our conversation below.
Shiyu, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
I will introduce a project that I really like. It’s a space renovation project focused on material utilization, located at Lake Titicaca in Peru. I chose this location in advance before conceptualizing the project. I am particularly fond of the local history and culture of Lake Titicaca, including the traditional attire of the people. Learning about the existence of over 140 artificial reed islands on this lake intensified my interest in the area. Consequently, I designed a floating park made of reeds.

Shiyu, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Shiyu Chen, and I come from China. I chose the major of interior architecture when I was in my sophomore year. As I delved deeper into my studies, I realized there were many areas of interior design knowledge I was yet to explore. Therefore, I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in Spatial Experience Design at Artcenter. My current project designs lean towards commercial spaces, and I also aspire to pursue a career in this direction in the future.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For creatives and artists, the most valuable recognition often lies in having their unique ideas acknowledged by both people and the market. Many times, the ideas of creatives and artists need to be adjusted to cater to the commercial market while maintaining their originality.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Non-creatives might find it challenging to understand the process of design thinking, which includes the investment of time, revisions, and multiple drafts. They might overlook this process and perceive creativity as stemming from a sudden burst of inspiration or an unexpected idea. In reality, creators often need to undergo repeated modifications and a period of refinement before arriving at a solid concept.
