Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shivani Sodawala. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Shivani, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
As a young adult, whenever someone asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said “a teacher.” I eventually became a rocket engineer instead—but that love for teaching never left me. Throughout school, I naturally gravitated toward helping my peers with their homework, and when I moved to the United States for further studies, I discovered online tutoring for the first time. It was a completely new concept to me, yet it allowed me to earn some money while doing something I genuinely enjoyed—helping students who needed just a little extra one-on-one support.
Then the pandemic hit. I had just begun my professional career, and suddenly everything around us seemed to come to a standstill. I kept hearing stories from coworkers about how their children were struggling with learning. As months went by, the data became increasingly concerning—students were falling behind in math, science, and other core subjects at an alarming rate.
Most of the education system had moved online, but the cost of personalized tutoring remained high. That’s when something clicked for me. If I could tutor effectively online, surely there were many others who could too—they just needed a platform to connect with students who needed them.
That realization became the spark for My Tutor-To-Go—an online learning platform that connects students seeking customized, one-on-one help with passionate tutors who can support them at affordable rates. What excited me most was the opportunity to make high-quality, personalized education more accessible for everyone. It wasn’t just about solving a logistical problem; it was about addressing a widening learning gap and offering a practical, scalable approach to close it.
Making online tutoring affordable and accessible is the vision that drives me every day with My Tutor-To-Go.

Shivani, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always had a passion for learning and helping others understand difficult concepts. I loved Math as much as I loved explaining it to others! Teaching has always been a part of who I am no matter what I am doing. I discovered online tutoring while doing my Masters, and it quickly became a meaningful way for me to support students one-on-one. I used to tutor students for the GRE exam while going to college, and having that ability to help others pursue their dream colleges with a good GRE score filled me with pride.
As I mentioned before, My Tutor-To-Go was born during the pandemic to make online, one-one-one and personalized learning more affordable and accessible.
We help students who want to get ahead, are maybe struggling, trying to catch up, or simply need concepts explained in a way that makes sense to them. What sets us apart is our commitment to combining high-quality tutoring with affordability and flexibility. I’m proud that we’ve built a service that truly helps students grow in both skill and confidence. Our tutors are professional who have helped many over the years and with the right combination, we provide a learning platform from Pre-K all the way through college. We also provide memory coaching and adult learning. Helping someone meet their language goal irrespective of their age and background is truly a blessing!
What I want people to know about My Tutor-To-Go is simple: we’re here to make personalized learning possible for every student, regardless of their situation. Our mission is to help students succeed—not just academically, but in the way they see themselves as learners.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn early in my entrepreneurial journey was the belief that everything would go according to my original plan. I’ve always been a perfectionist—someone who creates a plan, executes it, and expects the process to unfold smoothly. But building a business quickly showed me that reality doesn’t work that way.
I ran into unexpected roadblocks: things were out of budget, my developer missed deadlines, and even the hosting service I purchased wasn’t compatible with the platform we were building our website on. Every time I thought I had a clear path, something shifted. It was discouraging at first because nothing followed the direction I had envisioned.
But I learned something important: even if Plan A falls apart, there are always other routes to the same outcome. With grit and flexibility, I still reached the results I aimed for—just not in the way I initially planned.
Now, I approach challenges with multiple options in mind. I still start with Plan A, but I’m prepared with a Plan B and Plan C. This mindset has become invaluable not only in my business, but in my professional and personal life overall.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been consistency and reliability. In our industry, you can’t predict when a family will need support, so you have to show up consistently and prove that you’re dependable. Parents are trusting us with their child’s education, and that trust only develops through a strong, ongoing relationship.
We’ve learned that investing in our current clients is the best form of growth. Taking time to explain how our platform works, responding promptly to questions—even something as simple as clearing up an invoice—goes a long way. These small moments build confidence, and that confidence leads to referrals. Most of our new clients come directly from families who had a great experience and recommended us to a friend or colleague.
Every conversation with a client is also a chance to improve. We often implement changes based on their feedback and even create social media content inspired by topics they care about. Staying open to ideas and flexible with change has helped us evolve and continue growing.
