We were lucky to catch up with Shirren Luong recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shirren, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
1000% yes, without a doubt! I find so much joy in being my own boss. The most rewarding aspect is the freedom from answering to anyone but myself. I no longer need to request time off or attend meetings that don’t resonate with me. Each day I wake up with a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment as I engage in my “work.” I’m fortunate to be pursuing my true passion, surrounded by wonderful people and meaningful connections on a daily basis.
However, having your own business comes with its fair share of challenges, despite what you might see on social media. In my perspective, the biggest drawback is that there’s no “clocking out” time. You wear multiple hats—social media manager, content creator, editor, videographer, photographer, cleaner, manager, problem solver, painter, organizer, bookkeeper, and the mastermind behind everything related to your brand, to name just a few. Your brand will demand all your time and efforts, but if you stay committed and give your all to it, you’ll undoubtedly thrive.
Shirren, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello, everyone! I’m Shirren, the owner of Snatch Beauty Bar, a high-end aesthetic studio nestled in Pflugerville, TX. Within our walls, you can indulge in an array of services, including Full Body Waxing, 10-minute Brazilians, Intimate Skin Lightening, Ombre Brow Shading, Brow Lamination, and Brow Dye/Tint.
My commitment to excellence extends to every client who walks through our doors, where I bring a blend of my personality, expertise, and unwavering integrity to every interaction. I’ve cultivated genuine friendships with many of my clients because I pour my heart and soul into every session, no matter the service you choose.
I take particular pride in my work on brows and waxing, driven by an unshakable passion for these services. Recognizing that every individual’s skin is unique, I’ve tirelessly researched and tested numerous brands and products on diverse skin types to ensure that only the finest offerings grace our studio. I continue to stay at the forefront of the industry, regularly exploring new brands and products to ensure our clients receive nothing but the best.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my honesty and integrity are my strengths. If you’ve ever met me or know me, you know I suck at lying; my facial expressions betray me before I can even attempt to lie. Therefore, during numerous consultations with potential clients, I have consistently been candid with my opinions and shared my experiences. I would never recommend something unnecessary or engage in upselling just to make a sale. I don’t believe in that business method; although it’s worked for so many companies, but not here. If a service isn’t right for you or if I feel like you don’t need it, I will let you know and give you the opportunity to decide for yourself. My reputation and integrity hold greater value for me than any sale, any day.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Coming from a healthcare background, I had set up my retirement savings account and my savings account. The opportunity to take on a career path as a traveling Respiratory Therapist presented itself when the Covid situation was at its worst. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I couldn’t turn down, so I packed my bags, and left town. Thanks to these travel assignments, I not only became debt-free but also managed to save significantly.
I started diversifying my financial portfolio by opening various investment accounts, which ultimately provided the means to kickstart my business venture. During my final traveling assignment, I felt like I had a pivotal moment. It became so clear to me that returning to healthcare or taking on another assignment was no longer an option. It didn’t feel the same anymore; I was burnt out, stressed to the max, hated going into work and the list went on. I was so unhappy with the career path I had chosen.
After numerous heartfelt conversations with my husband, he encouraged me to pursue my dreams. He said, “It’s your time; you deserve it.” So, I took the leap of faith. I’m not going to lie, leaving behind a stable paycheck and a reliable income was terrifying. All the “what-ifs” flooded my mind all at once: What if my business plan fails? What if I can’t provide enough for my family? What if this is the worst decision I’ve ever made?…
Fast forward to today, my business just celebrated its second anniversary, and I have no intentions of stopping. Yes, it’s a lot of work, but I wouldn’t trade it in for my stethoscope.
