Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shima Toyserkani. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shima, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
When I reflect on my childhood, one of the many things my parents did right was allowing me to experience boredom. While it might seem counterintuitive, being bored gave me the space to think and imagine freely, without any distractions. It was during these moments that I would often come up with my most creative ideas—whether it was inventing new games, exploring artistic hobbies, or coming up with ways to entertain myself. This early exposure to boredom taught me the value of solitude and self-sufficiency, which has been incredibly valuable in both my personal and professional life. In the world of interior design, creativity is essential, especially in the early stages of a project. We often start with a burst of innovative ideas, pulling inspiration from all around us. However, creativity is only part of the equation. The real success lies in the meticulous execution of those ideas, where precision, attention to detail, and careful planning come into play. The ability to combine creative freedom with a disciplined approach is something that was nurtured in me from a young age and continues to shape the way I design today.
Another key aspect of my upbringing was how my parents allowed me to choose and self-manage my extracurricular activities. From a young age, I had the freedom to explore different interests, whether it was sports, music, or art. This autonomy not only fueled my curiosity but also gave me the responsibility of planning and organizing my commitments. I learned to set goals, manage my time, and prepare for each activity, which has helped me develop strong organizational skills. Being able to choose and commit to activities also taught me how to balance my interests with the discipline needed to succeed. These lessons in creativity and self-management have shaped who I am today.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
