We were lucky to catch up with Shilpa Lewis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Shilpa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I understand the struggles of the modern professional woman who often feel unfulfilled, stuck, and overwhelmed.
Having spent years in the technology space, I witnessed the challenges of working in corporate cultures.
I also experienced the challenges of being raised in the 70s in the United States, in an immigrant family, with traditional Indian culture.
I have first-hand experienced the personal and professional pressures placed on women leaving them feeling that they lack time and energy for self-improvement.
Shilpa’s Meditation & Yoga Background
As a child, I learned to meditate under the ancient Indian Vedic System.
Over the years I refined my meditation skills through the influence of my yoga guru Paramahansa Yogananda who is considered ‘the father of meditation in the West’. Through his teachings, offered through Self-Realization Fellowship, I studied Kriya Yoga meditation techniques.
In my late 20s, I was initiated Kriyaban Yogi in the Self Realization Fellowship lineage.
As my spiritual self-awareness journey continued, I dove deeper into Vedic and Yogic teachings, and went on to receive multiple yoga certifications.
In late 2018, after 20+ years working for Corporate Technology Leaders & Starts-up, I felt a calling to pause and pivot her professional path.
I realized my “WHY” was my son, Omni. I realized that after the untimely death of my mom, I wanted to be more present for my son and family.
Around 2019 I signed up to get certified as Meditation Coach.
In 2020 I received my Sura Flow Meditation Coaching Certification. Sura Flow Meditation style is a softer more feminine approach to meditation. It is a simple 3-step, heart-centered meditation approach that cultivates energy flow, creativity, and inner guidance for self-realization.
Soon I established my coaching business, Omni Mindfulness named after my son who inspires me every day to do better.
I now combine my classic meditation skills with more modern approaches to meditation that factor in the movement of energy.
To any young professional considering their own practice, I say get really clear on who you are and the role you want to play. If you enjoying being your own leader, then absolutely pursue starting your own practice.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My professional journey started in the corporate technology space shortly after receiving my masters Masters in Human-Computer Interaction.
I am now a Meditation Coach, show host of the Podcast Omni Mindfulness, Meditation Expert, producer of guided meditations on Insight Timer, and creator of my signature courses Awareness First, Happy Mind, and Second Act.
My goal is to offer meditation coaching as a wellness method for professional working women and mompreneurs.
My mission is to be a catalyst in shifting how women approach wellness to create better holistic alignment and balance.
My transformational coaching approach is practical and holistically integrated to align mind, body, and heart.
I offer coaching sessions, courses, group guided meditations, and workshops to help women more mindfully RELAX, RESET, and REVITALIZE their personal and professional life.
Why Meditation Coaching?
While a Meditation Teacher can facilitate and teach meditation, a Meditation Coach tailors the meditation program to support the lifestyle of the specific client.
As a meditation coach, I am right there along my client’s side guiding them on their path toward self-awareness and spiritual wisdom.
My approach includes familiarizing herself with her client through an “intake” form where I take time to understand the client’s intentions, goals, and life holistically. This allows me to build an authentic relationship with her client.
Through a variety of tools and techniques, I help my client cultivate a daily meditation practice that is framed around my client’s daily intentions or life goals.
In this coaching relationship, the meditation coach is simply there to maintain accountability, offer ongoing support, and hold space, while the client uncovers her own answers.
What this means is that the client and coach co-create the steps toward optimal wellness. Synergistically this dynamic relationship allows the client to navigate their path with confidence and trust.
My brand is built on 4 pillars: 1) Spirituality, 2) Mindfulness, 3) Energy Awareness, 4) Mindset
I’d like for my potential clients to know that my brand and content are curated to strategically and pragmatically support the lifestyle of the modern-day professional woman. This content comes in the form of blogs, articles, courses, workshops, and audio and video podcasts
I’m most proud of the success of my podcast which will soon reach its 100th episode.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back I would have pursued receiving my meditation and related training. Sometimes we think that pursuing a professional path that might be perceived as “not so safe” is impulsive. However, what I’ve learned is that your instincts and intuition are always guiding you for your highest good. Trust yourself.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Currently, I am focused on connecting to like-minded entrepreneurs through masterminds. I belong to a mastermind through spi (Smart Passive Income), and a couple of masterminds for professional entrepreneurial women.
