Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shilpa Gopal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shilpa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
My name is Shilpa Gopal and I am a content creator on Instagram. Last year, I switched to part time at my day job and went all in on growing my page. I went from a 10k followers to 100k+ shockingly fast after being able to put all my effort into it, and I was so excited. However, it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. My whole goal was to eventually quit my day job entirely and creating full time after I started making a liveable wage out of brand deals alone. I thought that after I had hit the 100k mark, the brands would be pouring in, but it really wasn’t the case at l for me. Yes, I’d get a few paid deals here and there, but nothing close to being able to live off. I still get pretty down about it at times, but I have to keep reminding myself that nothing worth it comes easy. Just because I grew, doesn’t mean I’ll be an instant success, and just because I am not an instant success, doesn’t diminish the success of having grown. This line of work is so ever changing and inconsistent, that it can be rely scary to put all your eggs in one basket. I am glad to still have a fall back, but have no regrets on my decision, even though I haven’t met my monetary goals yet.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a content creator on Instagram (@goshilpa) and I have been mainly creating content centered around South Asian, sustainable fashion and women’s empowerment. I started the page taking about my sustainability journey about 2 years ago and it has since transformed mostly into beauty and fashion. I love discovering new, small sustainable businesses that create amazing vegan and cruelty skin care/slow fashion clothing. I love showing my followers how to make the most of their existing wardrobe as well and have a lot of fun creating unique looks. I bring a lot of my Indian culture into my posts and try to add an ethnic element to everything to put my own twist on concepts. I am so proud of how much I e grown over the last year as well as the quality of my content. I am learning new editing techniques everyday and always aim to bring something new and fresh to existing trends. I am also a huge horror movie lover, so I try to add creepy touches wherever I can!
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I love working with new brands and typically have a really great relationship with everyone I have created content for. I try to make sure to always have open communication with every brand, create my content in a timely manner, and am always open to critique/willing to make small adjustments to my content in order to satisfy the brand’s needs.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I truly love seeing my end products and admittedly, spend a ton of time looking back at my own content! It’s so rewarding seeing all the things I used to create and how much my creations have grown into what they are now. I absolutely love creating conceptual photoshoots, so seeing ideas from my mind come to life is incredible.
