Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shevonne Philidor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Shevonne, appreciate you joining us today. Innovation comes in all shapes, sizes and across all industries, so we’d love to hear about something you’ve done that you feel was particularly innovative.

I would call this more strategic then innovative because it’s literally all there layed out, as an Artist trying to play big music festivals is everyone’s goal. Usually you either have an agent or manager / publicist to put you on, or you submit you epk along with 1,000+ other entries and hope someone will call you. I don’t have patience for all of that. I’ve played a bunch of big festivals and the way I did it with no management or agent. Was by researching and finding the festival promoters on Facebook or Instagram emailing them directly and bothering the shit out of them with my epk. Lol I figured a manager would’ve done the same! But it worked and I’ve been able to accomplish a lot using social media as a tool!

Shevonne, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

A multi-hyphenate, genre-bending artist, Shevonne Philidor is a singer-songwriter, producer, and actress who epitomizes her dynamic background in music and performing arts. A military brat born in Philadelphia, PA, she experienced living in multiple cities – including a stint in Italy – before landing in Tampa, Fl, where she nurtured her musical ability throughout her childhood. She’s a scion of a musical family stemming from her half-Haitian descent and taught herself to play the guitar at an early age, inspired by the likes of Prince, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley, and M83. In 2003, she made her first TV debut on America’s Most Talented Kids, and in 2010, she made an appearance on America’s Got Talent Wild Card. A recipient of the prestigious NFAA scholarship, she also made American Idol’s top 40 twice in 2016 and 2019, the same year she performed at Austin City Limits with five-time Grammy award-winning artist Gary Clark jr. In 2021, she performed alongside CeeLo Green at a Superbowl party for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers she’s a Luna Guitar-endorsed artist who was also selected to perform in Just Blaze’s SXSW showcase in 2022. A theatre kid at heart, she’s flexed her acting skills on a national tour for Todrick Hall’s musical, Oz The Musical, and she was also recently casted in Life’s Rewards, an Amazon Prime TV show.
She’s not just a passionate artist but embodies it as a triple fiery Sagittarius sun, Aries moon, and Leo rising. Her recent singles “Just Right” and “Kiss My Ass” is buoyed by her lithe Alternative R&B and Indie Pop vocals and acoustic guitar licks. An openly queer artist, she refuses to fit into a narrow box and encourages her fans to embrace their identity, despite societal expectations. Ruled by the largest planet in the galaxy, Philidor will always eschew the narrow status quo in her performances to make room for her vibrant, free-spirited personality. She’s a woman of many talents who’s worked to conquer them all.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.

I auditioned for American idol 6 times before I made it on the show. And then I was on the show twice top 40 back to back right after. I was on Americas got talent when I was 18 semi finals and Americas most talented kids when I was 12. I’ve had plenty of no’s but I keep going and every year gets better and I become more successful.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

A lesson I had to unlearn was perfection. Being on these tv shows only showed me it’s not about perfection and how much talent you have. it’s just about being genuine and showing the real you. I’ve been able to take that lesson with me and truly love myself and all that I have to offer the world.
