We recently connected with Sherry Younge and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sherry, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have been a Hairstylist for over 25 years. I collaborated my business with my husband Adrian where we have a hair salon and record store. My husband is a music producer and dj. When we collaborated our businesses together, I found that having a hybrid business was appealing to our clientele. We began to see that our clients appreciate our welcoming aesthetic as well as our expertise in hair designing for cuts and color. We play mostly music from the 60s-70, jazz/soul records while we work. Specializing in curly cuts have been essential to our business as we found that there became more of a need to find hairstylists that cater to curly haired clientele.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
The Artform Studio is a hair salon and record store where beauty and melody are synonymous. We strive in connecting with our clients to refine their artistic journey whether it’s providing a new hairstyle or music collection. During the pandemic, hairstylists were not allowed to work. I was inspired to become a dj since it’s a part of our business, records were the only thing I could touch during that time. I enjoyed it so much, I have continued to dj at local bars in our neighborhood.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building our following on social media platforms have to be consistent. I took pictures of our space, haircuts, and hair color designs. When video was an option to post, we did before and after process shots. Posting daily around 12p has been successfully working for us for years. We post all of our hairstylists’ work as well as our retail in hair care, records, and books. We add educational content for our postings for hair tutorials and music history.
Have you ever had to pivot?
It was a challenging time for all of us during the pandemic. I worked outside when we could only work outside when it was extremely hot. We had to work with indoor capacity limits and still have to pay 100% of our rent. I had incorporated online educational hair tutorials in hair trims and hairstyling tutorials for my clients. I also sold retail for curb side pick ups. I also learned to dj and started djing with a team of artists on a radio show segment with our team called Artform Radio.
