Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sherry Scott. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sherry , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I first started by business right before the pandemic in 2019. I had a vision that I wanted to work with the population that I have the most passion for. So, I thought of many different ideas and at the time all I could think of is providing service to older adults but not just older adults but adults that suffer from mental health diagnosis and also our veterans because there were not any programs out to help them. I wanted to provide them a place that they feel welcomed, loved and able to feel like they are contributing to society.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a master’s level Clinical Social Worker with a specialty in mental health. I have been in the mental health field since 2012. I have worked with children and adults who suffers from severe mental Health diagnosis. I have also worked with mental health providers in Wayne County, MI by providing oversight and consultation within their outpatient mental health programs.
So, I have been in this industry for the past decade. I have seen it all, from working in the psychiatric unit in the hospitals to working in an intensive program that service our severely mentally diagnosed individuals.
Working in these industries helped me to become the business owner that I am today. Time Together Adult Day Center is an adult day center for our mentally challenged population as well as our veterans. We provide socializations skills, health and wellness groups, activities of daily living, health maintenance, daily blood pressure checks, glucose monitoring, daily exercise, mental health awareness groups while also providing breakfast, lunch and a snack. Time Together also provides transportation to and from the program and a clothing pantry for those who are less fortunate.
When our members come to us, they are suffering from depression, PTSD, anxiety, paranoid schizophrenia, etc. and they are reluctant to come to the program. They leave wanting to come every day, wanting to be around their peers and wanting to interact in the program. The passion that I have for our mentally diagnosed population and our veteran population is what sets me apart from anyone else.
Our member’s family has come to us wanting help with problems with their loved one, such as interacting with others or even going through depression and not wanting to eat and get out of the bed. We have assisted them in being more independent, reminding them of reason to live every day and not just exist and these are things that I am most proud of … being able to really help those in need.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back, I would not change my profession or specialty. Working in this industry keeps me humbled and grounded. It helps me to better understand others and their story while also understanding that everyone has a story and being non-judgmental to it.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Other than training and knowledge. In order to succeed in this field, you have to have the passion and patience for it. You have to be willing to hear everyone stories and not take them home with you. You also have to be willing to listen, meaning that you have to pay attention to what is being said.
