We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sherry Heyl a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sherry, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I want to be remembered for empowering people to take control of their lives and stand up for what truly matters to them. Perhaps I’ve inspired others to create and express their ideas, insights, and talents without fear. I want people to remember me as someone who encouraged them to be more curious and less judgmental—both of themselves and others. And, I hope that I have fostered an environment where people feel free to grow into the best version of themselves. Ultimately, I hope my legacy is one of inspiring others to live courageously, making the most of their unique gifts and opportunities.
Sherry, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When I stepped into my first job as an IT recruiter, I quickly realized that compensation is so much more than just a paycheck. It’s about finding the right fit for your life. Some people were thrilled to trade a bit of salary for a flexible schedule that let them live life on their own terms. Others were all in, working long hours with the hope that their stock options would pay off big time. It became clear to me that work isn’t just something you do—it’s a key part of who you are and how you want to live.
Then, in 2005, I found myself at the forefront of a new frontier: social media consulting. I saw early on how social technologies were going to change the game for companies and their relationships with the public. But what really got me excited was the possibility of these tools helping people communicate better within their workplaces, making sure that everyone’s talents were recognized and put to good use. I’ve had the pleasure of helping a number of companies enhance their internal communication, but I’m always pushing for more because I believe in the power of a truly connected workplace.
Over the years most people thought of social media more for marketing than for internal communications. I’ve worked with small businesses and nonprofits, helping them fine-tune their sales, marketing, and hiring strategies. And now, with AI coming into the picture, I see more ways for technology to help people work in ways that are meaningful to them, allowing them to craft lives where they can fully express their talents and passions.
Today, I collaborate with companies to build solutions that are agile, resilient, and geared for growth. Whether it’s making remote work more effective, weaving AI and automation into daily operations, or fostering a culture of innovation, I’m all about creating workplaces where both businesses and employees can flourish. My mission is to help redefine how we work, enhance well-being, and ensure that everyone has the chance to shine in a role that truly fits them.
What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to using technology as a tool for individual empowerment and transformation. I’m incredibly proud of the work I’ve done to help people and businesses navigate a constantly changing world. If there’s one thing I want potential clients to know, it’s that I’m here to create solutions that don’t just work today, but that build a foundation for lasting success and fulfillment.
Have you ever had to pivot?
In March 2020, I reached a turning point. I closed my laptop, handed over my office keys, and informed the office manager that they could sublease my space. I was burned out and in desperate need of a break. I set my company website to simply state: “Under Renovation. Because the last few years have changed us all.” For the next year, I took a step back, delivering for Uber Eats as a way to earn a living while I recharged. This period gave me the space to listen to podcasts, listen to books, and reconnect with inspiration.
After some time, I was offered an opportunity to lead the digital media efforts for a B2B consulting firm. This role provided a way to transition back into the professional world without the immediate pressure of running my own company. It allowed me to ease back in while regaining clarity on what I wanted to do next.
Starting in 2023, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. The ideas I gathered during my time away were urging me to take action. I realized it was time to return to the work I’m passionate about and bring those ideas to life. The books I’ve been planning won’t write themselves, and the concepts I’ve been developing are ready to be implemented.
Today, I’m excited to announce that my new website is live. The new and improved Amplified Concepts is the culmination of my experiences, insights, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. While the resource and online training sections are still being developed, I invite you to sign up for updates and reach out if you’re interested in connecting or learning more. I’m ready to make a meaningful impact once again.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe being one of the first to recognize and speak about disruptive business trends played a significant role in building my reputation. Early on, I saw the potential for change and began offering solutions to help businesses navigate these shifts effectively. This positioned me as a thought leader in my field and opened the door to numerous opportunities, such as speaking at conferences and organizing events. I was also entrusted with leadership roles in various associations, which further expanded my influence.
However, I think what truly set me apart was my genuine passion for what I do. I’ve always felt that my work has the power to make a positive impact—not just on businesses, but on people’s lives and, by extension, the world. It’s this deep belief in the value of my work that has driven me to consistently deliver my best and build lasting relationships within my market.
