Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sherry Finzer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sherry, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I had aspirations of being a classical flutist in a symphony or orchestra when I was younger, but chose a different path. As a woman who returned to music later in life, I wish to inspire others that they can do the same, not only in music, but whatever they were passionate about earlier on in their lives, but put aside to raise a family, or go into a more “stable” career.
Sometimes I wonder how my career may have turned out if I had stayed on the music path early on, but I really wouldn’t trade all of the jobs and experiences I had before returning, as they all helped me to be able to do what I do today, which is creating music for wellness and healing, and running my record label Heart Dance Records, along with my radio promotions company Higher Level Media.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
It took me several years to realize just how powerful that music is, and how effective that it can be as a tool for healing and wellness. After returning to music in my late 30’s, I spent many years moving from classical music, to learning to play by ear and improvising – playing with many different musicians and learning other styles of music, including jazz and flamenco. My journey eventually led me to start creating my own music in the healing and relaxation genres after listeners began to share stories with me of how my music affected them and helped them with issues like stress, depression and physical pain.
Since 2009 I have recorded over 30 albums and EP’s, collaborating with over a dozen artists, and have been blessed with the opportunity to grow my women-owned and run record label and have worked with and released music for close to 100 artists, with a similar mission to help others through music. I love to use a variety of different flutes on my recordings, from the concert C flute down to the very low contrabass flute, bringing in a large selection of world and Native American-style flutes.
It has been an incredible honor to connect with listeners and fans all around the world and learn how my music has helped them. Many connections have been made through my live streams and tracks that are available on the Insight Timer Meditation app.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There have been studies completed over the last several years that still show that the music industry is very unbalanced in the ratio of women/men in major roles with labels. promotions, and other companies related to releasing music. I definitely have had to fight much harder to get to where I am, and felt that I was not taken seriously because of being a woman. Being told that I cannot do something has always been an incredibly strong driving force for me to prove that I absolutely can do it, and will not let anyone stop me.
With the advice of many to “keep doing what your are doing”, I perservered. Working with honesty and integrity has gotten me to this point of my career, and I am very proud of the team that I have built that works with me.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Listeners from around the world have found me and reached out to let me know how much my music has affected them. From teachers using my music to calm their students in their classroom to a Vietnam Vet with tinnitus who uses my music through a masking program with his hearing aids, I have learned just how much that music helps with healing and overall well-being. I do believe that this is my purpose and my mission in life, and feel extremely blessed to help others with my gifts.
