Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sherrie Esguerra . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sherrie , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
My journey started 10 years ago when I started nursing school. I always had a passion for caring for people since I was a young girl. I pursued my nursing career not knowing exactly what field I wanted to go into. At this time I was in my 20s and had a strong passion for fitness, health and all things beauty. I did not really know you could venture out and find that in nursing. I thought nursing was hospital and bedside only. Throughout my nursing school I got this impression that if you were going to make it as a Registered Nurse then you had to start in the hospital and no where else. The few people that mentioned becoming nurse injectors were really looked down upon, and I noticed never got the support and attention as other specialities mentioned that were hospital based. It was at that time that my true passion was unknowingly pushed aside. After working bedside for about 5 years, I realized this is not the nursing that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It was most definitely rewarding but also mentally and physically draining. I then decided to further my education and start Nurse Practitioner school. I had a conversation with my sister in law and she asked me, rather replanted the seed of aesthetics. She asked me such a simple question of- whatever happened to aesthetics and getting started in what you love. I had already forgotten about it at this point because I was so busy with life and just routine. Not to mention, I had 2 kids under 2 and another on the way. Towards the end of the nurse practitioner program, I began to think about what I really want to do, and I kept circling back to aesthetics. At this point, I was scared to try to attempt something so out of my comfort zone. I finally mentioned it to my husband and he gave me the most support and encouragement that I wondered why I didn’t bring it up to him 10 years ago. From then, I took my first training course and did not do anything with it for 1 whole year. Again, I was so scared to step out of my comfort zone. Finally, after talking myself into it, building confidence, listening to podcasts, following like minded people on social media, it gave me the courage to step out of my comfort zone and just move forward to start my business. I started Skin and Body Rx in the fall of 2022 and I cannot believe where I am today. I could say that I wish I would have started earlier in my career, but I do believe things happen for a reason. My advice for any young professional who may be starting their own practice is to just go for it! It may be scary, and you will never fully feel ready, but find a great mentor, get your trainings and licenses and make the jump, the rest will come one baby step at a time.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Sherrie Esguerra. I am an Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner. I have a passion for helping people build confidence in themselves. This can be any where from providing injectables such as Botox, fillers, microneedling, to weight loss, IVs, and medical grade skincare. My main priority is safety and meeting the goals of the patient. Most of my time spent in an appointment is during the consult. What exactly are they wanting to achieve, is it a realistic goal? What are different options of reaching those goals? What are the expectations. I feel like building that relationship and that trust is where it starts as an injector. And that is one of my favorite parts of my job is building that connection with my patients, and receiving messages that show they are happy with results or the progress, that they love to look in the mirror, that they feel and look great, and that they are more confident in their own skin.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Aesthetics is constantly evolving due to science. So of course, training and knowledge is key. The thing is, anyone can take countless amounts of training and courses. I think it takes more than that to grow and succeed. My intentions have never been first and foremost the money aspect of it. It starts with building that relationship and trust with my patient and then truly caring for their results. This will help you grow organically. I am constantly emailing, calling, messaging my patients after their treatments. Anywhere from the same day of treatment to 2 week follow ups. I actually genuinely care to know how their results are, how they are healing, and if they are satisfied with their results. Many practices see so many people that that person becomes just another number. I thrive on keeping in touch because no one patient is the same. Their response to medication, their goals, their anatomy is all very unique to that individual. So the difference between Skin and Body Rx and the clinic down the street is that we are consistently following up to make sure patients are not only happy with results, but educated on what to expect. More importantly if the patient is not entirely happy, that is 100% ok. We will bring them in, and do whatever it takes to fix it, by doing this it builds trust, loyalty, and success.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Social media has such a big influence in businesses today. So it was important for me to really engage and be active with my business on social media. Building my reputation started out with supporting master injectors and local reputable injectors. I think the support I had for them showed a lot in my business, and that it is not just about competition. When they shared educational information or videos, I shared those to my platform as well. It shows that I support and believe in my colleagues and other experienced injectors. I value that education more than a competition. I also love to incorporate my self care and my personal treatments. This shows my real life raw results. It shows that I am using these treatments that I offer my patients, and that I truly believe in the services that I offer.
